White goods such as refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, clothes washers, clothes dryers and other large appliances are collected weekly with bulk waste. The curbside rules also tell residents to put electrical appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, water heaters and microwaves on the curb.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. White goods are collected on the weekly bulk route inside the ten cubic yards per collection included in the standard residential rate of $21.50 per month, so no separate per appliance charge is published for curbside collection.
When & how
Collected weekly with bulk waste, at the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day. The city's item guide names the Huntsville Landfill as a paid alternative for appliances.
Get it ready
Remove the door, snaplock or other latching device before the appliance goes out, because the city code makes it unlawful to leave a refrigerator, icebox or similar container large enough to enclose a person accessible with the door in place. Keep the appliance on the bulk pile rather than in the cart.
Garbage carts, bulk items and yard waste go to the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day. The city code bars putting containers out before sundown the day before collection, bars leaving them out after the collection day, and requires them in place before the work day begins.
Carts sit no more than two feet from the curb with the arrows on the lid pointing toward the street, and at least five feet from mailboxes, utility poles, flower beds, fences, parked cars and other obstacles. The trucks are automated, so blocked carts are left behind and crews do not return for them.
Bulk waste, white goods and loose yard waste go between the sidewalk and the curb, or in another accessible place the Sanitation Division approves. Tree limbs are cut to five feet with protruding branches trimmed, and the pile stays neat so it does not block the sidewalk, traffic or water flow.
There is no residential collection on the listed city holidays, and when a holiday falls on a weekday the rest of that week runs one day late, with the Monday route moving to Tuesday. Leave the cart at the curb until it is collected, and check the recycling schedule separately because it uses a different holiday list.
The city code makes it unlawful to set out an icebox, refrigerator or similar container large enough to enclose a person without first removing the door, the latching device or the snaplock. Take the door off before the appliance reaches the curb.
Cart contents are limited to household garbage. Paint, chemicals, solvents, dead animals, rocks, dirt, construction debris and medical or biological waste are refused, and crews will not return for a cart that was set out late, blocked or holding unauthorized material.

Self haul in Huntsville means driving to the Solid Waste Disposal Authority's household hazardous waste facility at 1055 A Cleaner Way, open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and open rain or shine. That is where electronics, televisions, batteries, paints, chemicals, pool chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, used oil, antifreeze, expired medicines and sharps go, and it is the reason none of those items belong in the garbage cart or the recycling cart. The city's item guide also says the Huntsville Landfill accepts appliances for a fee and recycles them through an outside contractor, but no address, hours or amount is published, so call the Sanitation Division at 256-883-3964 or the authority at 256-882-0155 before loading.
