The transfer stations take scrap metal including washers, dryers, hot water heaters and refrigerators, but the Freon rules differ by site and the county does not publish a per-appliance price.
City cost & eligibility
Scrap metal and appliances carry residential fees at the transfer stations and the county publishes no per-appliance amount, so confirm the item and the rate at the scale house.
When & how
Take the unit to Catalina or Sahuarita during gate hours, or ask about the designated Freon area at Sahuarita, which allows one Freon item per household per year on a non-commercial basis.
Get it ready
Have the refrigerant removed and certified for a refrigerator or freezer. Catalina lists a refrigerator only with no Freon, Sahuarita requires the item to go to a designated area, and Ryan Field refuses refrigerators and anything containing Freon.
The town code does not allow garbage or aggregate material to travel inside the town limits in an open vehicle unless it is in a closed container or an enclosed cargo area, and a load must not be able to drop, shift, leak or escape. The county also charges extra for an uncovered load at the gate.
Keep hazardous waste and electronics out of the bulky load
The county facilities refuse hazardous waste and the recycling drop-offs refuse electronics, carpeting, clothing, furniture, tires and hazardous material. Hazardous material and electronics go to the household hazardous waste program, where Marana residents pay the published per-visit fee.

Ryan Field accepts bagged household waste only and refuses furniture, carpet, construction debris, dirt, rock, concrete, bricks, fencing and Freon items. Hazardous waste and liquid waste are refused everywhere, and an uncovered load costs extra.
The self-haul route for Marana is Pima County. Catalina on Oracle Road and Sahuarita on La Canada Road both take furniture, carpet, green waste, construction debris, dirt, rock, concrete and bricks, and they charge a residential load by the vehicle under one ton or by the ton above that; Ryan Field takes bagged household waste only and refuses bulky material and Freon items, and Ajo takes bulky residential material by volume. Those sites also run free resident recycling, free antifreeze, battery, oil and paint collection within a five gallon monthly maximum, and free resident tires up to five a year.
