When & how
Put the mattress out by 6 a.m. on Monday of the scheduled bulk week and no earlier than 10 days before, keeping it inside the 10 cubic yard pile.

Keep the mattress dry and in the bulk pile rather than the trash cart, and do not take it to a Zero Waste Day event, which lists mattresses among the items it does not accept. Bag the household trash that shares the pile, because uncontained trash is refused.
The bulk pile has a two week window and a hard limit
Bulk trash and green organics go out by 6 a.m. on the Monday of the scheduled collection week and no earlier than 10 days before it, and a holiday in that week does not move the collection. The pile is limited to 10 cubic yards, which the city describes as the size of a small SUV, and the city moves each address on its own every-other-month schedule rather than every week.
Trash and green organics go into two distinct piles four feet apart, and every item stays four feet away from a solid waste container, fire hydrant, gas meter, telephone or utility box. Nothing goes over a manhole cover, curbside addresses keep the pile on the property line in the street or at the front edge of the driveway without blocking the sidewalk, and alley addresses keep it along the fence line without blocking the alley.
