Can you haul a hot water heater laying down?

Transport a new or reusable water heater upright and follow the model’s carton or manual instructions. A.O. Smith warns that laying a heater down can cause cosmetic and functional damage. An emptied, disconnected scrap tank is a different disposal question, so do not assume one universal rule for hauling it horizontally; arrange qualified disconnecting and draining, then confirm the collector’s loading requirements.

Decide whether the heater is for use or disposal

If you plan to install or keep the heater, keep it upright and follow the manufacturer’s orientation instructions. Do not transport it as though it were scrap.

If the tank is being discarded, treat it as an emptied, disconnected scrap appliance. Confirm that it is fully ready for collection and ask the disposal provider how it should be loaded. Do not transport a pressurized hot tank or attempt disconnection without qualified help.

Check the local disposal option

In New York City, residential bulk recycling accepts emptied water heaters up to 50 gallons under the city’s collection conditions. Larger water heaters require a private carter. Other jurisdictions and facilities can use different acceptance rules, so check the local program before arranging transport.

Prepare the pickup

Before collection, make sure the heater is disconnected, emptied and accessible. If you cannot move it outside yourself or need indoor carrying, choose a service that includes that labor.

Where Dropcurb fits

Dropcurb can handle an accepted water heater that is already outside and accessible. Standard pickup includes loading, transportation and disposal, but you arrange moving the item out first; indoor carry-out is not available. If you can place the emptied heater outside before pickup, check the water-heater option and current price.
