Does Goodwill pick up furniture for free?

Use Goodwill’s donation directory to reach the appropriate local organization. Read its furniture and pickup policies, then ask about your piece by name and condition.

Keep three questions separate: will the organization accept it, can someone collect it, and what will collection cost? A yes to the first question is only an acceptance decision. This matters when you cannot bring a sofa or dresser to the store yourself. Confirm the complete handoff before spending time preparing the piece or arranging help.

Goodwill of North Georgia provides a concrete example: it offers donation pickups through a partner and states that the donor pays for that service. That is a regional arrangement, not a price policy for every Goodwill.

Before confirming a third-party booking, check the provider, total and included work. If you need a heavy piece carried downstairs, ask about that explicitly. Compare services on the task they will complete, rather than treating every donation pickup link as a free offer.

Show the local organization the piece as it is now. Include a photo, dimensions and any damage, missing parts, odor or staining. Tell it if the item needs disassembly or if it is a sleeper sofa or another unusually heavy piece.

Wait for confirmation before transporting the item. If it is declined, the reason helps you choose the next route: another recipient may be appropriate for a usable item, while a damaged piece may need disposal.

Many Habitat ReStores offer free collection of large donations, subject to the local store’s acceptance rules. That can be worth checking when the piece is usable but your Goodwill does not offer a suitable pickup.
