The city publishes a specific handling rule for the items that need one: wrap mattresses in plastic or a disposal cover, cut carpet into four foot lengths and bundle it into a single roll, disassemble gym sets and swing sets and bundle them, call Republic Services about an older refrigerator that may need freon removal and tagging, and bundle and tie yard trimmings or non-treated wood waste with no more than four bundles per pickup. Everything goes in the location the agent specifies when the pickup is scheduled.
The city publishes a long refused list for bulky collection: auto parts, bathtubs with showers attached, boats, camper shells, construction and demolition debris, fencing, a whole garage door, household hazardous waste, pianos, plywood and wallboard, pools, pool tables, roofing, satellite dishes, shopping carts, shower modules, sinks, sliding glass doors, spas, tires, tree stumps, universal waste such as batteries and fluorescent bulbs, and windows. Each of those needs its own route rather than a spot in the pile.
Batteries have three routes and lithium is the exception
Household batteries such as alkaline, zinc-carbon, 9 volt, AA, AAA, C and D go out in a clear zipper bag on top of the recycling cart on the service day, or to the Palomar Transfer Station Recycling Buyback Center, or into the collection bins at the Georgina Cole Library, the Dove Lane library and the Library Learning Center, where only non-rechargeable household types are taken. Lithium batteries and coin cells are hazardous waste instead and go to the Vista facility free of charge or through the paid door collection.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?+
Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.
