When & how
Use an on-call collection or the next Environmental Recycling Day at De Anza College between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. for a small load, or order a debris box from Recology at 408.725.4020, since Recology is the exclusive hauler of garbage in Cupertino and the only provider allowed to haul a mixed garbage box.
Get it ready
Separate material where you can, because a single-source load of metal, sheet rock, clean wood or concrete may be hauled in another provider's own box while a mixed load may not. Painted or treated wood is refused at the recycling day, and treated wood waste such as pressure-treated lumber must be handled as hazardous material and may not be mixed with other construction waste. Covered projects must file a debris recovery plan and divert at least 65% of nonhazardous construction and demolition waste from landfill.
Cupertino households get two on-call collections a year at no additional charge, limited to three bulky items per collection, and every collection has to be booked with Recology at least 24 hours ahead and placed on private property at the driveway entrance by 7 AM. Loose pieces must fit inside an area 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet high, and each item must stay under 50 pounds and under 6 feet. Hazardous waste such as paint, medication, solvents, pesticides and fertilizers is refused in an on-call collection, and treated wood such as fence posts and deck material is refused with it. Those materials belong at the county household hazardous waste drop-off, which needs a free appointment and proof of residency, and the city Environmental Recycling Day is not a substitute because it refuses products containing toxic chemicals. Electronics should never go in a cart, because the city and the state prohibit e-waste in garbage, recycling and compost containers.

Cupertino residents bring identification such as a driver's licence or a current collection bill and unload their own vehicles.
