Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

The Athens bulky item pickup is Downey's route for items too large for a barrel. Residents can have up to five items collected per pickup, and the definition covers furniture, mattresses, box springs, carpet and bundled yard trimmings no longer than four feet and no more than two feet in diameter. Bulky items must be scheduled in advance and must not be placed in a barrel.
The handoff matters
Barrels go to the curb the night before the service day or by 6 a.m. on the day itself. Athens observes New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and a holiday creates a one-day delay in collection, while a holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday does not delay service. The black barrel is for landfill material, the blue for clean recyclables and the green for organics including untreated wood and food scraps.
