Ready for it to go

The old sofa can stop holding up your plans.

You know it needs to go. The price, the pickup day and knowing it is done should be easy to settle, too.

A replacement is on the way.

Give the old couch its own pickup day. Check what your retailer will remove, then book the part you still need handled.

The move has enough moving parts.

You are ready for the space back.

You do not need a whole room to clear. Book the sofa, recliner or sectional that needs to go, and follow the pickup through updates and photos.

The right sofa. The right price.

Count the sections, not the cushions.

A loveseat, a sleeper and a sectional can look similar in a photo. Match the shape and features so your online price covers what is actually going.

Three structural sectional modules slightly separated, with all cushions remaining on their bases.
This example has three structural sections. The cushions do not add to the count.

A straight sofa or loveseat

Choose Standard sofa for fixed seats with no pull-out bed or reclining mechanism. One whole sofa is one item.

A sectional

Count its structural sections, not the loose cushions. Choose the piece count, then check for a sleeper or reclining feature. One sectional booking covers the configuration you select.

A pull-out bed or reclining seats

Choose Sleeper sofa or Reclining sofa for those mechanisms. A single reclining chair has its own Recliner choice. All sofa types also includes futons and sofas with a chaise.

Couches, sofas and furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture leads the bulky item list EDCO publishes for Encinitas, and the service guide adds carpet, rugs and book shelves to the same route. The piece is collected at the curb or the end of the driveway on an appointed day for a nominal fee per item.

City cost & eligibility
A furniture item is collected as a bulky item for a nominal fee per item that EDCO quotes when the pickup is booked. The free annual cleanup coupon at the Palomar Transfer Station is the no-cost alternative.
When & how
Book the pickup with EDCO and set the furniture at the curb or the end of the driveway by 6 a.m. on the appointed day.
Get it ready
Keep the furniture out of the trash, recycling and organics carts, and leave tires, dirt, concrete, asphalt, hazardous chemicals and liquid waste out of the same pile.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Book the bulky pickup and be out by 6 a.m.

The bulky item pickup in Encinitas is by appointment through EDCO, and the item has to be generated from inside the home. On the appointed day the item goes to the curb or the end of the driveway by 6 a.m., where a separate bulky item truck collects it for a nominal fee per item. Furniture, carpet, rugs, book shelves, mattresses, scrap metal, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, ranges, microwaves, water heaters, washers, dryers and air conditioners are all on the published list, and refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners cost more because of the refrigerant.

Use the free cleanup coupon once a year

Encinitas residents receive one free cleanup coupon each year to dispose of large unwanted items at the Palomar Transfer Station, and the coupon and its instructions arrive in the Environmental Times newsletter inserted in the billing statement. A resident arriving with a manual trailer has to go to the Escondido Resource Recovery facility instead, which takes those loads on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cart placement and the holiday delay

Carts go to street level with the wheels against the curb and out of the way of traffic, with at least two feet between carts and three feet from obstructions, and everything out by 6 a.m. on the service day or the night before. There is no residential collection on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, and the rest of that week runs one day late; a holiday that falls on a weekend does not delay the week.

City of Encinitas Public Works Trash and Recycling Program with EDCO Waste and Recycling Services

Book an EDCO bulky item pickup

A household with a couch, a mattress, an appliance, a water heater or another large item generated inside the home.

Cost & conditions
EDCO collects bulky items for a nominal fee per item and publishes no amount, and a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner carries a higher fee because of the refrigerant, so ask EDCO for the price when the pickup is booked.
Arrange it
Contact EDCO to schedule the appointment, then set the items at the curb or the end of the driveway by 6 a.m. on the collection day. A mattress has to be wrapped first.

Tires, dirt, concrete, asphalt, hazardous chemicals, liquid waste, construction and demolition debris and fluorescent bulbs will not be collected on this truck, and the residential service guide also lists electronics as not accepted even though EDCO's current bulky page names one television or computer monitor.

Use the free annual cleanup coupon

An Encinitas household that would rather drive its large items to a transfer station than pay a per item collection charge.

Cost & conditions
No charge. One free cleanup coupon each year to an Encinitas resident for large unwanted items at the Palomar Transfer Station, printed in the Environmental Times newsletter inserted in the billing statement.
Arrange it
Keep the coupon from the billing newsletter and take the items to the Palomar Transfer Station, or to the Escondido Resource Recovery facility on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. if the load arrives on a manual trailer.

The coupon is issued once a year and its instructions come with the billing newsletter rather than on demand, and a manual trailer cannot use the Palomar Transfer Station at all.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self-hauling in Encinitas splits by material. Paint, oil, chemicals, batteries and bulbs go to a North County household hazardous waste facility: the City of Vista site at 1145 East Taylor Street or the City of Poway site at 12325 Crosthwaite Circle, both free to Encinitas residents with proof of residency on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and neither requiring an appointment. Universal waste, electronic waste, batteries and sharps also drop free at an EDCO buyback center during operating hours, with sharps required in a rigid sealed container and loose sharps refused, and items too large for the blue recycling cart are taken free at the same buyback centers. The city's quarterly drive-up universal waste event in the City Hall parking lot at 505 South Vulcan Avenue adds another free drop for batteries, bulbs, electronics and sharps. The one load a resident can drive is a large household item on the free annual cleanup coupon at the Palomar Transfer Station, and a manual trailer has to use the Escondido Resource Recovery facility on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Construction and demolition material is different: a covered project has to divert at least 65 percent of its debris, file a Waste Management Plan and keep weight tickets, and the hauling has to be EDCO under the city franchise or a self-haul with the project's own staff and equipment, because a non-franchised third party hauler is prohibited. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Couch removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Encinitas.

How much does couch removal cost in Encinitas?

A standard sofa is $79 as the first item and $29 additional. Sectionals, sleepers and reclining sofas have their own choices. Select everything that is going to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax appears before payment.

Can you pick up my couch today?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the couch outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We send pickup updates and photos when it is done; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.

How do I book a sectional for removal?

Open Sectional in the sofa choices, count its structural sections, and select any sleeper or reclining feature. Count the sections with their own bases, not loose cushions. The matching catalog choice covers one complete sectional of that configuration. Text a photo before booking if you are unsure.

Will you carry my couch out of my apartment?

Dropcurb starts outside. Arrange for the sofa to be moved through the apartment and down interior stairs before pickup. We load and haul it away from an accessible outdoor spot. Arrange any dismantling needed to get it outside beforehand.

Do I need to wait at home for couch pickup?

You do not need to be home when your booked sofa is outside and accessible. Add photos and pickup-location notes to your order so the right pieces are easy to identify. We send updates and completion photos. Confirm any building access restrictions with us before booking.

Will EDCO take a couch from the curb in Encinitas?

Yes. Furniture heads the bulky item list EDCO publishes for Encinitas, and the residential service guide puts carpet, rugs and book shelves on the same route. The piece is collected at the curb or the end of the driveway by 6 a.m. on an appointed day for a nominal fee per item, booked with EDCO, and the free cleanup coupon is the alternative once a year.Official guidance

EDCO Waste and Recycling Services collects under the city's franchise agreement, running the three stream curbside carts, the bulky item pickups and the construction and demolition hauling. The City of Encinitas Public Works Trash and Recycling program runs the rules and the education side and answers at (760) 633-2850 or recycling@encinitasca.gov, and collection problems can be reported through the MyEncinitas app.Official guidance
