Filled bags and boxes
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard and containers
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Furniture and other larger items
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Large household items are collected on a scheduled bulky item pickup instead of the curb, and the city's page describes four bulky items across two pickups a year at no charge while the hauler's page describes four bulky item pickups in a 12-month period.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. The City of Ventura states that residential customers may arrange four bulky items during two pickups a year without charge. E.J. Harrison's own page words the same benefit as four bulky item pickups in a 12-month period at no charge, so confirm the allowance that applies to the address when booking at 805-647-1414 or through the hauler's request form.
When & how
Call 805-647-1414 or 800-41-TRASH, or submit the hauler's online request form. Nothing is collected at the curb on the regular trash day, and the city asks residents not to set a mattress, an appliance or furniture out with the trash carts while a pickup is pending.
Get it ready
Keep the items on the property until the hauler gives you an appointment date, then set them out as directed for that date. Ask the hauler how early to set the pile out, because no citywide bulky set out clock is published. Disposing of it is the whole point of the appointment, so do not include anything you want returned.
Tires are named in the city's bulky item definition, and the transfer station also takes them from self haulers at a published per tire charge.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. A tire that goes out on a bulky item pickup uses the city's annual bulky item allowance at no charge. A tire that is hauled to Gold Coast Recycling instead is charged at the station's published tire rates, and the tire store that sold the new tire will often take the old one back at no cost.
When & how
Request the bulky pickup at 805-647-1414, or take the tire to Gold Coast Recycling on Colt Street during its open hours.
Get it ready
Ask the shop that sold you the new tires about a take back first, because the city points residents there and notes that many tire stores accept used tires for a fee. Keep tires out of the monthly household hazardous waste event, which refuses them.
A mattress goes out on a bulky item pickup, and one mattress and box spring set a year can be recycled free at Gold Coast Recycling.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. A mattress is collected on the city's bulky item allowance at no charge. Gold Coast Recycling takes one mattress and box spring set per year for free from a city resident, and a retailer delivering a new mattress may take the old one away as well.
When & how
Book the bulky item pickup at 805-647-1414 or through the hauler's request form, or take the set to Gold Coast Recycling at 5275 Colt St. during its open hours.
Get it ready
Do not set the mattress at the curb with the trash carts. The city lists donating a gently used mattress to a local charity before recycling, and it points to the Salvation Army among others. Keep the set dry and out of the rain until it leaves.
Furniture is a named bulky item, so a couch or a table leaves the property on a scheduled bulky item pickup, and the city points usable pieces at local second hand stores first.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Furniture goes out on the city's bulky item allowance at no charge, and the count is confirmed with the hauler at booking because the city's page and the hauler's page describe the annual allowance differently.
When & how
Book the pickup at 805-647-1414 or online, then set the piece out as the hauler directs for the appointment date.
Get it ready
Never set a couch or a table at the curb with the trash carts. The city lists Goodwill, the Coalition Thrift Store, the ARC Foundation and Thrift Store, the Boys and Girls Club Thrift Store and the SPARC Second Chance Store as local donation options for gently used furniture, so offer a usable piece there before booking a pickup.
Large household appliances and water heaters are named bulky items, and a unit with refrigerant that is self hauled to the transfer station carries the station's Freon extraction charge on top of the disposal charge.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. An appliance goes out on the city's bulky item allowance at no charge. A refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner that is hauled to Gold Coast Recycling instead is charged a Freon extraction charge per unit plus the disposal charge at the scale house.
When & how
Book the pickup at 805-647-1414 or online, or take the unit to Gold Coast Recycling on Colt Street during its open hours.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, remove food and loose parts, and keep it on the property until the pickup is scheduled. The hauler also lists water heaters and old bathroom and kitchen fixtures as common bulky items, so those follow the same route.
Electronic waste cannot go in the trash or the recycling cart, and disposal is free for a City of Ventura resident with a Ventura address at Gold Coast Recycling.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Electronic equipment disposal is free for residential customers at Gold Coast Recycling, and the city states that a resident should bring identification and a Ventura address. Commercial businesses pay a fee for the same drop off, so a business load is quoted by the station.
When & how
Take the device to Gold Coast Recycling at 5275 Colt St. during the station's open hours, weekdays from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. The station is closed Sunday.
Get it ready
Computers, monitors, televisions, printers, fax machines, cell phones, VCRs, DVD players, consoles, lamps and small kitchen appliances are all accepted, and the station's rule of thumb is that anything with a circuit board counts as electronic waste. Wipe or remove personal data before the device leaves your hands. A hazardous item that is not a device goes to the monthly household hazardous waste collection event instead.
Project debris does not go on a bulky item pickup. The city's construction and demolition program requires a diversion plan and sends the material through a franchised roll off container or a documented self haul facility.
City cost & eligibility
The city sets no published price for project debris. A roll off container is rented from the franchised hauler with construction and demolition recycling rates quoted on request, and a self hauled load is charged the transfer station's tonnage rate with an added construction and demolition rate, so ask for both figures before ordering.
When & how
Submit Form 1, the waste management plan, for approval before the building permit is issued, keep the recycling receipts and weight tags, and file Form 2, the final report, before final inspection. Approvals go through Ventura Online Permits Services, and the coordinator is at 805-652-4525 or CDFORMS@cityofventura.ca.gov. Order the container before the project starts generating debris.
Get it ready
Covered work has to divert at least 65 percent of its construction and demolition waste from landfill, and the requirement reaches new permitted construction, permitted demolition and residential additions or alterations that increase conditioned area, volume or size, plus non residential additions and alterations. Onsite collection has to use the city's franchise hauler at 805-647-1414, and self hauling is limited to a licensed contractor using its own employees and equipment as an incidental part of the job. Segregate concrete, asphalt, rock, brick, dirt and sand before hauling, and confirm with the receiving facility that it can document the diversion rate.
Furniture, mattresses and appliances are collected on a scheduled bulky item pickup, and the city asks residents not to set any of it out on the curb with the trash bins. Keep the items on the property until the hauler gives you a pickup date, then set them out as directed.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
E.J. Harrison & Sons, the City of Ventura franchise hauler
Book a bulky item pickup
A household with furniture, a mattress, an appliance, a water heater, a carpet, tires, or old bathroom or kitchen fixtures to clear.
Cost & conditions
No charge. The City of Ventura states that residential customers may arrange four bulky items during two pickups a year without charge, and E.J. Harrison's page words the benefit as four bulky item pickups in a 12-month period at no charge. Confirm the allowance for the address when booking at 805-647-1414 or 800-41-TRASH.
Arrange it
Call 805-647-1414 or submit the hauler's online request form, then set the items out as directed for the appointment date instead of on the regular trash day.
The city asks residents not to set bulky items at the curb with the trash carts, and it points usable furniture and appliances at local second hand stores first. A machine that neither the city nor the hauler lists as a bulky item, such as a treadmill, is not covered by this appointment until the hauler confirms it.
Self hauled trash and hard to handle material from residents and businesses, recyclables at the buy back center, electronic equipment at no charge for residential customers, antifreeze, auto and household batteries, motor oil and filters and latex paint at no charge for residential customers of the hauler, one mattress and box spring set a year at no charge, and tires charged by size.
A load is charged the minimum for half a ton or less and the per ton rate above that, and a load the customer identifies as construction and demolition is charged the added construction and demolition rate. Bring identification for the free residential electronic equipment drop off and keep the load separated, because green waste, recyclables and refuse go to different areas. The station refuses hazardous waste, medical waste, oily waste, solvent solid waste, chemical toilet waste, radioactive waste, dead animals, pesticides and tennis shoes, and it will not accept the hazardous household items that belong at the monthly city collection event.
Gold Coast Recycling is open weekdays from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is closed Sunday. The recycle buy back center is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Phone 805-642-9236, and call before a Saturday trip because the city page and the hauler page publish different Saturday closing times.
From $37.84 for a self hauled load of half a ton or less at the scale house. A load over half a ton is charged 73.18 per ton, and a load the customer identifies as construction and demolition is charged an added 20.00 per ton for a rate of 93.18 per ton. A sealed unit with refrigerant adds a Freon extraction charge per unit plus the disposal charge, fluorescent lamps are charged 0.35 per foot for commercial and non hauler customers with a limit of ten lights a day, ballasts and dry cell batteries are charged 0.35 and 1.00 per pound, a special pull off is 50.00 plus the disposal charge, and motor oil is bought back at 0.04 per quart with a 20 gallon limit in five gallon containers. Tires are charged 7.00 below 36 inches, 35.00 from 36 to 60 inches, 225.00 per ton for car tires, 250.00 per ton for solid and truck tires from 36 to 60 inches and 250.00 each for truck tires over 60 inches. Electronic equipment is free for residential customers and charged at normal self haul rates for commercial customers.

Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.

Call E.J. Harrison and Sons at 805-647-1414 or 800-41-TRASH, or submit the request form on the hauler's website. Bulky items are not collected on the regular trash route, so the pickup has to be arranged first, and the city asks residents to confirm the allowance that applies when they book.Official guidance
What counts as a bulky item in Ventura?+
The city defines bulky items as discarded large household appliances, furniture, tires, carpets, mattresses and similar large items that need special handling because of their size. The hauler's page lists broken or old furniture, water heaters, mattresses, old bathroom and kitchen fixtures and household appliances among the common bulky items it collects.Official guidance
Can furniture go out with the trash carts?+
No. The city states that old furniture and appliances cannot be set out on the curb with the trash bins, and that a bulky item pickup has to be scheduled instead. Setting the piece out early also risks a report to the city's Safe and Clean Hotline at 805-677-3900.Official guidance
Will Ventura take old tires?+

Can tires go to a household hazardous waste event?+
No. The hauler's page lists tires among the items that are not accepted at the monthly household hazardous waste events, along with fireworks, smoke detectors, radioactive and medical waste, explosive materials, compressed gas cylinders and trash.Official guidance

Gold Coast Recycling and Transfer Station on Colt Street allows one mattress and box spring set per year to be recycled at no charge for a city resident. Otherwise book a bulky item pickup through E.J. Harrison, and ask the retailer delivering a new mattress whether it will take the old one with it.Official guidance
Does a mattress go out with the trash in Ventura?+
No. The city states that a mattress cannot be set out on the curb with the trash bins and that a bulky item pickup has to be scheduled. Yes, on a scheduled bulky item pickup. Furniture is named in the city's definition of a bulky item, so a couch, sofa or table is collected from the address on an appointment rather than on the regular trash day.Official guidance
Can I donate furniture instead of throwing it away?+
Yes. The city lists Goodwill, the Coalition Thrift Store, the ARC Foundation and Thrift Store, the Boys and Girls Club Thrift Store and the SPARC Second Chance Store as places that take gently used furniture, and it frames donation as the first option before a bulky item pickup.Official guidance
Will Ventura take a refrigerator or a washer?+
Yes. Large household appliances are named in the city's bulky item definition and household appliances appear on the hauler's common bulky item list, so a refrigerator, washer, dryer or stove is collected on a scheduled pickup rather than on the trash route.Official guidance
Is there a charge for an appliance with refrigerant?+

Computers, monitors, televisions, printers, cell phones, VCRs, DVD players, consoles and small kitchen appliances are on the accepted list.Official guidance
How do I get rid of construction debris in Ventura?+
Project debris does not go on a bulky item pickup. Either order a roll off container from the city's franchise hauler, which recycles construction and demolition debris and quotes special recycle rates on request, or self haul it to a facility that can document the diversion. Roll offs come in 10, 25 and 40 yard sizes and every roll off has a 10 ton maximum weight limit.Official guidance
Does my project need a waste management plan?+
Covered projects do. The city requires a Form 1 waste management plan before the building permit is issued and a Form 2 final report before final inspection, with the recycling receipts and weight tags that back up the diversion. New residential, commercial and mixed use construction has to divert at least 65 percent of its construction and demolition waste from landfill under CALGreen.Official guidance
Can I haul construction debris myself?+
Only in a narrow case. City ordinance allows self hauling when a licensed contractor uses its own employees and equipment as an incidental part of the total service, and that contractor has to direct haul segregated material to a local facility that can show the 65 percent diversion. A project without its own bins, trucks and crew is required to use the franchise hauler.Official guidance

E.J. Harrison and Sons is the city's exclusive franchise hauler and handles the weekly curbside collection of trash, recycling and yard waste, with residential pricing, billing and cart changes at 805-647-1414 or 800-41-TRASH.
