When & how
Schedule the pickup at (562) 334-3660 and put the mattress out on the collection date. Mattress drop-off at the transfer station runs during its public hours, Monday to Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and free of bed bugs, keep the pad and topper out of the pile because the city refuses them, and send a mattress and box spring together. At the transfer station the load has to be unloaded before the late afternoon cutoffs.
Bulky material is only collected on a scheduled pickup, so the request goes to Universal Waste Systems by phone, email or the website with a list of the items. Once the collection date is confirmed, the items go on the sidewalk or parkway of the property rather than into the street, and the crew counts each piece against the monthly allowance.
A residential customer and a multi-family tenant each get up to ten free bulky items every month, and the count starts again the next month rather than running for the calendar year. The city's own example is a household that sets out twelve items in June and is charged for the eleventh and twelfth, then receives up to ten free items again in July.
Bed-frame parts, futons, couch beds, mattress pads and toppers, water beds, air mattresses, items with bed bugs and excessively wet, damaged or soiled items are all refused, and furniture is only taken when two people can lift the piece. Bundled wood has to be no longer than four feet, and construction and demolition material is not part of the program at all.
