Filled bags and boxes
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard and containers
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Furniture and other larger items
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

The city collects bulky waste by appointment, with two free pickups per unit a year of up to five items each on a one to six unit property.
City cost & eligibility
From $75 for the published charge for an additional bulky collection beyond the free allowance. Every one to six unit non commercial property gets two free pickups per unit a year of five items or fewer, so a one family home has two free pickups, a two family home four and a six family home twelve. Beyond that, an extra collection costs 75.00, or a 10.00 permit covers up to four visits to the transfer station with the resident doing the hauling, and setting bulk items out without a scheduled collection carries a 99.00 fine.
When & how
Call Hartford 311 at 860-757-9311 or Public Works at 860-757-9983 to schedule, and put the listed items curbside after 4 p.m. the night before the appointment or before 7 a.m. on the collection date. Items are not to be placed in roadways or blocking sidewalks.
Get it ready
Schedule first, because items set out without an appointment are a fineable violation. Keep the pile to five items or fewer, put out only the items that were listed on the call, and keep hazardous or toxic material out of the pile entirely, because bulky waste does not include it.
Furniture is named in the city's bulky waste definition, so a couch goes out on a scheduled pickup inside the free allowance.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Furniture rides the free bulky allowance of two pickups per unit a year with five items or fewer each, and each piece counts as one of those five items. Beyond the allowance, an additional collection is charged at the published rate.
When & how
Call Hartford 311 at 860-757-9311 or Public Works at 860-757-9983 with the list of items, then put the furniture out after 4 p.m. the night before or before 7 a.m. on the appointment date.
Get it ready
List each piece when scheduling, keep the total to five items, and keep the pile out of the roadway and off the sidewalk. A piece that still has life in it may be more useful donated than picked up, since the city route is disposal.
Mattresses are named in the city's bulky waste definition and go out on a scheduled pickup inside the free allowance.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. A mattress rides the free bulky allowance of two pickups per unit a year with five items or fewer, with each piece counted separately inside that limit, and an additional collection beyond the allowance is charged at the published rate.
When & how
Schedule with Hartford 311 at 860-757-9311 or Public Works at 860-757-9983, then set the bedding out after 4 p.m. the night before or before 7 a.m. on the appointment date.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and count the box spring as a second item, and keep the pile out of the roadway and off the sidewalk. Hazardous or toxic material never belongs in a bulky pile.
Appliances are named in the city's bulky waste definition, and a unit with refrigerant needs a confirmation because the hazardous waste collections refuse Freon appliances.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. An appliance rides the free bulky allowance, but a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner contains Freon, which the Metropolitan District's household hazardous waste collections refuse and which the packet says some towns handle for a small fee, so call Public Works at 860-757-9983 to confirm how the unit will be taken before it is set out.
When & how
Schedule the pickup with Hartford 311 at 860-757-9311 or Public Works at 860-757-9983, and raise the refrigerant question when the item list is taken.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, keep the doors secured, and keep a refrigerant unit out of a do it yourself transfer station load until Public Works confirms it will be accepted there. Appliance bodies that fit the bulky list go out with the other scheduled items.
Electronics are named in the city's bulky waste definition, and Connecticut law also requires the town to collect computers, televisions, monitors and printers without charging a fee for those four categories.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. An electronic item can ride the free bulky allowance of two pickups per unit a year with five items or fewer, and the MDC packet records that towns cannot charge a fee for recycling computers, televisions, monitors and printers although they may charge for other electronics. Retail and recycler options are also available at their own terms.
When & how
Schedule a bulky pickup with Hartford 311 at 860-757-9311 or Public Works at 860-757-9983, or use a town or retail electronics program, which includes Green Monster e-cycling at 150 Brook Street in West Hartford on 860-231-1426, Staples for computers, monitors, laptops, printers, faxes and all in ones, and Best Buy with a limit of three items per day.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the recycling and trash bins unless a local program says otherwise, and note that the Metropolitan District's hazardous waste collections do not take electronics at all, so a television or computer has to use the bulky route, the town program or a retailer. Wipe personal data before a computer leaves your hands.
Construction material is one of the reasons a city bin is left behind and it is not named in the bulky waste list, so a project load needs a private hauler.
City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no rate for construction material because it is not part of the curbside or bulky program. The city waste page names construction materials among the items that will leave a bin uncollected, and it publishes a list of Hartford area private waste haulers for the load, so call a hauler or Public Works at 860-757-9983 for the arrangement and price.
When & how
Arrange a private container or haul before the project generates debris, and keep construction material out of the city bin and out of any bulky pile.
Get it ready
Separate clean material such as concrete, brick and lumber from mixed debris so a hauler or facility can price the load, and keep hazardous waste out entirely because the bulky program excludes hazardous and toxic material.
Tires are named in the city's bulky waste definition, so a tire goes out on a scheduled bulky pickup inside the free allowance.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. A tire is bulky waste under the city's own definition and rides the free allowance of two pickups per unit a year with five items or fewer, counting as one item. Beyond the allowance an additional collection is charged at the published rate, or a 10.00 permit covers up to four transfer station visits.
When & how
Call Hartford 311 at 860-757-9311 or Public Works at 860-757-9983 with the tire on the item list, then put it out after 4 p.m. the night before or before 7 a.m. on the collection date.
Get it ready
Count each tire as one of the five items, keep it out of the roadway and off the sidewalk, and keep automotive fluids and other hazardous material out of the pile because bulky waste excludes hazardous and toxic material.
Exercise equipment is not named in the bulky waste definition, so the machine has to be confirmed with the city before it goes out.
City cost & eligibility
No published rate covers an exercise machine because the city does not name the category, so call Hartford 311 at 860-757-9311 or Public Works at 860-757-9983 and ask whether the machine can be listed on a bulky collection and whether it counts as one item.
When & how
Call with the machine type before scheduling, and put it out only after the item list is accepted.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart and keep the loose weights with it. Leave it off the curb until the collection is scheduled, because an unscheduled bulk item is a fineable violation.
Schedule the bulky pickup before anything goes to the curb
Bulky items have to be scheduled first through Hartford 311 at 860-757-9311 or Public Works at 860-757-9983, with the item list given on the call. The pile goes out after 4 p.m. the night before the appointment or before 7 a.m. on the collection date, stays out of roadways and off sidewalks, and holds no more than five items. Setting bulk items out without a scheduled pickup carries a 99.00 fine.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
City of Hartford Department of Public Works Waste and Recycling Division, with the Metropolitan District running household hazardous waste collections
Schedule a city bulky waste collection
A one to six unit non commercial property with appliances, electronics, tires, furniture, mattresses, small bundles of branches or other large items to clear.
Cost & conditions
No charge. Two free pickups per unit a year, each covering five items or fewer, on a one to six unit non commercial property, so a one family home has two free pickups and a six family home twelve. An extra collection beyond the allowance costs 75.00, a 10.00 permit covers up to four transfer station visits, and an unscheduled curbside pile carries a 99.00 fine.
Arrange it
Call Hartford 311 at 860-757-9311 or Public Works at 860-757-9983, give the item list, take the next available collection date, and put the items out after 4 p.m. the night before or before 7 a.m. on that date.
Five items per collection and only the items listed on the call, so an unlisted item is left behind. Hazardous and toxic material is not bulky waste, a commercial property, apartment complex or building over six units is not eligible, and a refrigerant appliance needs a confirmation first.

Buy a transfer station permit and haul it yourself
A household with more than five bulky items, or a load it would rather drive to the transfer station than schedule for curbside collection.
Cost & conditions
From $10 for the published permit for up to four visits to the transfer station. The permit costs 10.00 and covers a maximum of four visits, and it is the city's published alternative to paying 75.00 for each additional curbside bulky collection beyond the free allowance.
Arrange it
Ask Hartford 311 at 860-757-9311 or Public Works at 860-757-9983 for the permit and the transfer station details, then transport the items yourself.
The permit covers four visits only, and the same material limits apply as on a curbside collection, so hazardous and toxic material still has to go to a Metropolitan District collection and a refrigerant appliance still needs to be confirmed with Public Works.
