The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

St. Johns County is an administrative area rather than a city with its own public works yard, so the answer to a bulky item question starts with the county Solid Waste Division. FCC Environmental Services is the single contracted hauler for residential curbside work, the once-a-week garbage, recycling and yard waste service is funded by an assessment on the tax bill, and a household that needs an appliance collected has to ring the division on (904) 827-6980 to arrange it rather than leave the unit at the kerb. Everything else large goes out with the regular pickup: couches, sectionals, mattresses and household furniture are placed at the kerb next to the garbage, while tires, construction and demolition debris and household hazardous waste are specifically excluded from curbside collection. Yard waste has its own published limits, with branches and stumps under 6 feet and 50 pounds stacked neatly and everything small bagged, bundled or containerised in 32 gallons or less. Two transfer stations at Tillman Ridge and Stratton Road take the rest, including white goods, hazardous waste, obsolete electronics and flattened cardboard, with a fee table for tires, treated wood, mixed loads, construction debris and paint that is paid in cash or by cheque.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

An appliance is recycled curbside only after the household schedules a collection with the Solid Waste Division, and white goods can also be taken to either transfer station.

City cost & eligibility
The county tells residents to contact the Solid Waste Division to schedule an appliance collection and publishes no separate curbside appliance fee, while the transfer station fee table lists only tires, treated wood, mixed loads, fluorescent bulbs and paints. Confirm the current arrangement and any charge on (904) 827-6980 or SolidWaste@sjcfl.us before the unit goes out.
When & how
Call the Solid Waste Division on (904) 827-6980 or email SolidWaste@sjcfl.us to schedule the appliance collection, or take the white good to the Tillman Ridge Transfer Station at 3005 Allen Nease Rd in Elkton or the Stratton Road Transfer Station at 250 North Stratton Rd in St. Augustine, both open Monday to Friday 7 am to 6 pm and Saturday 7 am to 1 pm.
Get it ready
Empty and clean the unit, secure or remove the doors, and keep the appliance out of the garbage container because non-containerised garbage other than bulky waste is not collected and no can or bag may weigh more than 50 lbs. Keep refrigerant containing units out of a mixed curb pile until the division has confirmed how the unit will be handled.

Bulky furniture and kerbside large items

Accepted with preparation

Large items such as couches, sectionals, mattresses and household furniture go at the kerb next to the regular garbage, and bulky waste is the one exception to the rule against loose material.

City cost & eligibility
The county publishes no bulky item fee and simply directs residents to place large items at the kerb next to the regular garbage, while the transfer station fee table covers only the listed materials, so confirm any charge with the Solid Waste Division on (904) 827-6980 before a heavy cleanout.
When & how
Put the bulky items at the kerb next to the regular garbage on the collection day, with everything out by 6 am and separated from recycling and yard debris, or take them to a transfer station during its published hours.
Get it ready
Keep each item liftable and out of the garbage container, because non-containerised garbage other than bulky waste is not collected and no can or bag may exceed 50 lbs. Keep tires, construction and demolition debris and household hazardous waste out of the kerb pile because special waste is not collected curbside, and avoid placing anything in front of a vacant lot, land or other property because it will not be collected.

Yard waste, brush and stumps

Accepted with preparation

Yard waste is collected on the standard service day within published bag, container, length and weight limits, with no charge beyond the tax-bill assessment.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. St. Johns County residential units on the county collection programme, which is funded by the once-per-week solid waste assessment on the tax bill; the published guidelines set no separate charge, and material outside the size and packaging rules is simply not collected.
When & how
Set the yard waste out with the regular collection day, separated from garbage and recycling and curbside by 6 am, with small pieces bagged, bundled or containerised and larger pieces stacked neatly.
Get it ready
Branches, shrubs and stumps must be no longer than 6 feet and no heavier than 50 lbs and stacked neatly, leaves, grass clippings, twigs and small pieces must be bagged, bundled or placed in a receptacle no larger than 32 gallons and 50 lbs, and a pile that has to be pulled apart will not be collected. Do not blow leaves into the street or storm drains, and keep whole trees, land clearing debris, fencing, landscape timbers, garden hoses, planters, flower pots and yard decorations out of the pile because they are not yard waste.

Transfer station drops for bulky, white goods and special items

Accepted with preparation

Both county transfer stations take household garbage, white goods, hazardous waste, obsolete electronics and flattened cardboard, with a fee table for tires, treated wood, mixed loads, construction debris and paint.

City cost & eligibility
From $2.75 per tire when ten or fewer are brought in, with $210.00 per ton for ten or more tires, $67.26 per ton for commercial loads, pressure treated wood or mixed loads of garbage with construction and demolition debris, $0.75 each for fluorescent bulbs 2 to 4 feet and $1.00 each for 6 to 8 feet, $2.00 per gallon for latex paint and $4.00 per gallon for oil-based paint. St. Johns County residents with proof of residence such as a driver's licence showing a current county address; fees are paid by cash or cheque only, and household hazardous waste, obsolete electronics, white goods and flattened cardboard are taken without a listed fee.
When & how
Take the load to the Tillman Ridge Transfer Station at 3005 Allen Nease Rd in Elkton or the Stratton Road Transfer Station at 250 North Stratton Rd in St. Augustine, open Monday to Friday 7 am to 6 pm and Saturday 7 am to 1 pm.
Get it ready
Bring a driver's licence or other proof of a current St. Johns County address, separate flattened cardboard for the drop-off centre because no other recyclables are accepted there, transport fuel in an approved container that may have to be left on site, and keep lithium-ion batteries out of the garbage and recycling carts because they can start fires and belong at a retail or county drop-off point instead.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

One weekly collection, funded on the tax bill

St. Johns County runs a single residential curbside programme, and FCC Environmental Services has been the sole provider since August 1, 2024. The assessment on the property tax bill pays for once-per-week garbage, recycling and yard waste collection, and the hauler does not supply garbage containers, so the property owner buys them and asks the county on 904-827-6980 for a recycling cart. Garbage, recycling and yard debris have to be separated by the resident and placed curbside by 6 am on the collection day, within 3 to 5 feet of the edge of the travelled roadway, with household garbage in cans or secured plastic bags so animals and wind cannot scatter it. No collections run on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or New Year's Day.

The kerb has hard limits, but bulky waste is the exception

Nothing in a can or plastic bag may weigh more than 50 lbs, non-containerised garbage is not collected except for bulky waste, and anything left in front of a vacant lot, land or other property is skipped. Tires, construction and demolition debris and household hazardous waste are on the special waste list and never come off the kerb. What does come off the kerb is the bulky pile: couches, sectionals, mattresses and household furniture go at the kerb next to the regular garbage, and an appliance is recycled curbside only after the household schedules the collection with the Solid Waste Division on (904) 827-6980 or SolidWaste@sjcfl.us, which is the same contact for a recycling cart.

Yard waste has size rules and the transfer stations take the rest

Yard waste goes out on the standard collection day with branches, shrubs and stumps no longer than 6 feet and no heavier than 50 lbs stacked neatly, and leaves, grass clippings, twigs and small pieces bagged, bundled or in a receptacle no larger than 32 gallons and 50 lbs. Anything that has to be pulled apart is not collected, and whole trees, land clearing debris, fencing, landscape timbers, garden hoses, planters, flower pots and yard decorations are not yard waste at all. For everything the kerb will not take there are two transfer stations, Tillman Ridge at 3005 Allen Nease Rd in Elkton and Stratton Road at 250 North Stratton Rd in St. Augustine, open Monday to Friday 7 am to 6 pm and Saturday 7 am to 1 pm, where residents with proof of a current county address can bring household garbage, white goods, hazardous waste, obsolete electronics and flattened cardboard, and pay the published fees in cash or by cheque for tires, pressure treated wood, mixed loads, construction debris and paint.

Drop lithium-ion batteries at a retailer

A household holding lithium-ion batteries that must not go in the garbage or the recycling cart.

Arrange it
Take the batteries to a participating retailer such as Home Depot, Staples or Lowe's, or to a county drop-off centre, rather than putting them in the garbage or recycling cart.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self hauling in St. Johns County runs through the two transfer stations, because the county's kerbside programme is the only curbside option and it is reserved for the materials on its list. Tillman Ridge at 3005 Allen Nease Rd in Elkton and Stratton Road at 250 North Stratton Rd in St. Augustine are both open Monday to Friday 7 am to 6 pm and Saturday 7 am to 1 pm and closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Residents who show proof of residence, such as a driver's licence with a current county address, can bring household garbage, white goods, hazardous waste, obsolete electronics and flattened cardboard, with the hazardous waste list covering motor oil, oil filters, gasoline, cleaners, pool chemicals, pesticides, aerosols, antifreeze, car and appliance batteries, paints, solvents, thinners, transmission and brake fluid, propane cylinders and photo chemicals, and fuel needing an approved container that may have to be left on site. Obsolete electronics include monitors, televisions, computers, laptops, printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, cables, game hardware, drives, phones, radios, stereos, speakers, small kitchen appliances and power tools. Fees apply across the scale for tires, pressure treated wood, mixed loads of garbage with construction and demolition debris, fluorescent bulbs and latex or oil-based paint, and they are payable only in cash or by cheque. How does a St. Johns County appliance get collected?

By appointment. The county tells residents to recycle appliances curbside by contacting the Solid Waste Division on (904) 827-6980 or SolidWaste@sjcfl.us to schedule the collection, which separates appliances from the ordinary bulky furniture that can simply be placed at the kerb. White goods may also be taken to either the Tillman Ridge or Stratton Road transfer station, which are open Monday to Friday 7 am to 6 pm and Saturday 7 am to 1 pm, and the county publishes no curbside appliance fee, so confirm any charge when the collection is booked.Official guidance

What counts as a St. Johns County large item?

The county lists couches, sectionals, mattresses and household furniture among the large bulky items that go at the kerb next to the regular garbage. Bulky waste is the exception to the rule that non-containerised garbage will not be collected, so a sofa can sit beside the cans, while tires, construction and demolition debris and household hazardous waste are refused at the kerb. Put everything out by 6 am on the collection day, separated from recycling and yard debris, and confirm any charge with the Solid Waste Division on (904) 827-6980 before a large cleanout.Official guidance

What are the St. Johns County yard waste limits?

Branches, shrubs and stumps must be no longer than 6 feet and no heavier than 50 lbs and stacked neatly, while leaves, grass clippings, twigs and small pieces have to be bagged, bundled or placed in a receptacle no larger than 32 gallons and 50 lbs. Larger pieces go into small, neat, manageable piles, and anything that has to be pulled apart will not be collected. Whole trees, land clearing debris, anything over 6 feet or 50 lbs, unbagged small pieces, fencing, landscape timbers, garden hoses, planters, flower pots and yard decorations are not treated as yard waste.Official guidance

Can St. Johns County residents use the transfer stations?

Yes. Residents with proof of residence, such as a driver's licence showing a current St. Johns County address, may bring items to either the Tillman Ridge Transfer Station at 3005 Allen Nease Rd in Elkton or the Stratton Road Transfer Station at 250 North Stratton Rd in St. Augustine, both open Monday to Friday 7 am to 6 pm and Saturday 7 am to 1 pm and closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Household garbage, white goods, hazardous waste, obsolete electronics and flattened cardboard are taken, and fees apply to items such as tires, pressure treated wood, mixed loads, construction debris and paint, paid by cash or cheque only.Official guidance

Who collects St. Johns County garbage and recycling?

FCC Environmental Services is the sole residential curbside provider for St. Johns County, holding the contract since August 1, 2024, and the Solid Waste Division manages that contract from 2750 Industry Center Road in St. Augustine on (904) 827-6980 and SolidWaste@sjcfl.us. The assessment on the property tax bill pays for once-per-week garbage, recycling and yard waste collection; the hauler does not provide garbage containers, so owners buy their own and request a recycling cart from the county. Garbage, recycling and yard debris go out separated and curbside by 6 am, with household garbage in cans or secured bags.Official guidance

How do St. Johns County appliances leave the house?

By appointment with the county rather than by leaving the unit at the kerb. The county says to recycle appliances curbside by contacting the Solid Waste Division on (904) 827-6980 or SolidWaste@sjcfl.us to schedule a collection, which is the same contact used for a recycling cart. White goods are also accepted at either transfer station, Tillman Ridge in Elkton or Stratton Road in St. Augustine, and the county publishes no curbside appliance fee, so confirm any charge when booking.Official guidance

What can go at the kerb in St. Johns County?

Large bulky items such as couches, sectionals, mattresses and household furniture go at the kerb next to the regular garbage, and bulky waste is the exception to the rule that non-containerised garbage is not collected. Yard waste goes out with the same collection when branches, shrubs and stumps are no longer than 6 feet and no heavier than 50 lbs and stacked neatly, and leaves, grass clippings, twigs and small pieces are bagged, bundled or in a receptacle no larger than 32 gallons and 50 lbs. No can or bag may exceed 50 lbs, and tires, construction and demolition debris and household hazardous waste are never collected curbside.Official guidance

What does the St. Johns County transfer station charge?

Household garbage, white goods, hazardous waste, obsolete electronics and flattened cardboard carry no listed fee for residents with proof of a current county address, while tires are charged per piece up to ten and per ton beyond that, and pressure treated wood, mixed loads of garbage with construction and demolition debris and commercial loads are charged by the ton. Fluorescent bulbs cost a set amount each by length, latex paint is charged by the gallon and oil-based paint at a higher rate per gallon. Both stations pay only by cash or cheque, open Monday to Friday 7 am to 6 pm and Saturday 7 am to 1 pm, and close on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.Official guidance
