City cost & eligibility

Arrange the pickup with the hauler, take the bedding to Metro Park East Landfill during its posted hours, or hold it for the spring cleanup day.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress and box spring dry and count them as separate pieces, because each one is treated as its own item at the landfill and by most haulers. Confirm whether the hauler wants bedding bagged or wrapped before it goes to the curb.
Five haulers serve the city, and each one prices its own service
Ankeny Sanitation, Aspen Waste Systems, Garbage Guys, Waste Connections of Iowa and Waste Management of Iowa all collect residential garbage in the city, and the city sends residents to the company they use for rates, pickup days and times, yard waste fees, large item and extra trash procedures, missed collections and cart changes. The city itself publishes no collection rate.
The free city events for limbs, leaves and large junk
Spring cleanup day lets residents inside the corporate limits dispose of large unwanted items free of charge at the Ankeny Sanitation site on SE Delaware Avenue, with proof of residency and no trucks larger than a pickup. Tires come off the rim and are limited to 5 per household. Tree and branch recycling runs three times a year at the City Maintenance Facility on SE Lorenz Drive, and leaf collection days run in October and November.
Metro Park East Landfill takes the self hauled loads
The landfill at 12181 NE University Ave. in Mitchellville is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. between April 1 and October 31 or from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. between November 1 and March 31. Small vehicles pay a flat rate by vehicle and larger vehicles pay by the ton with a minimum, and a load mixing material types is charged at the highest applicable rate.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

There is no city rate because each household contracts privately, so call the company that serves the address for the item price, the collection day and any special handling an appliance needs.

Watch the city recycling events page for the date, load the vehicle, and bring proof of residency to the Ankeny Sanitation headquarters on SE Delaware Avenue.
Antifreeze, asphalt, batteries, clothes dryers and washers, computer monitors, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, freezer and refrigerator, furnaces, microwave ovens, oil, ovens and stoves, paint, pesticides, propane and helium tanks, television sets, tree stumps, water heaters and yard debris are refused. Tires are accepted off the rim up to 5 per household.
Residential garbage, construction and demolition material, yard waste at the compost center on site, mattresses and box springs, appliances including refrigerators, freezers, ranges, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water heaters, furnaces, washers, dryers, dishwashers and microwaves, electronics and televisions that do not contain a cathode ray tube, tires and bulky waste such as telephone poles and unprepared trees.
Cathode ray tube electronics and televisions are refused, doors must be removed from refrigerators and freezers before appliance recycling, loads carrying more than one material type are charged at the highest applicable rate, and payment is due at the time of service by cash or card. Bulky waste over 6 feet long and 18 inches in diameter carries its own per ton rate.
Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. between April 1 and October 31 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. between November 1 and March 31.
From $12 for the flat rate for a car load under 200 pounds, with vans and SUVs and then large vehicles at higher flat rates, and vehicles over 6,000 pounds charged by the ton with a minimum for residential garbage, yard waste, construction and demolition material and electronics, plus separate appliance, television and tire rates. Any household delivering waste to the landfill, with payment due at the time of service. A load that mixes material types is charged at the highest applicable rate, and appliance recycling has its own published residential rate.
