Two views of the same room corner: a treadmill on the left, and a small desk and chair in its place on the right.
A new use for the same space, once the old machine is outside and gone.

Room for what comes next

Your space can have a new purpose.

A home office. Room for a guest. A little more floor to enjoy. When an old machine is in the way, a clear pickup plan makes the next step easier.

The room is changing.

Book the equipment you are ready to let go of, whether it is one exercise bike or several machines. See the total before making the plan.

A replacement is coming.

Check whether your retailer includes removal. If the old treadmill is still your responsibility, give it a pickup day of its own.

It is not making the move.

Settle the price online, arrange to have it outside, and follow the pickup through text updates and completion photos. One less thing to coordinate before the keys change hands.

Match the machine

The right choice covers the right equipment.

Choose by the type of equipment. A brand name does not mean a different item, but a walking pad and a full treadmill do.

Treadmill, walking pad or commercial model?

Household treadmill includes folding home models with a tall console. Choose Walking pad for a compact under-desk model, or Commercial treadmill for a large gym machine. All equipment opens those choices.

An exercise bike, elliptical or rower

Spin, upright, recumbent and air bikes all use Exercise bike, including Peloton and other brands. One elliptical includes its connected base, handles and pedals. Rowing machines and Pilates reformers have their own choices.

Weights, racks and benches

Add together the pounds of loose dumbbells, kettlebells, plates and barbells. Free weights are priced in 10 lb units, rounding the combined weight up. For example, 25 lb uses three units. Add a stand, rack or bench separately if it is going too.

Plan the move outside before pickup day.

A machine can be too heavy or awkward for a solo move. Arrange suitable help for indoor carrying, stairs or any dismantling needed to reach the outdoor pickup spot.

A pickup day is not an exact arrival window. Tell us before booking about a shared loading area, restricted outdoor access or equipment whose size or setup you are unsure how to select.

Your place. One easy pickup plan.

Exercise equipment

Accepted with preparation

Exercise equipment appears on the landfill's own recycling fee list at three dollars each, which is the one explicit local acceptance for a machine.

City cost & eligibility
$3 per exercise equipment item at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center. Residents and businesses in Johnson County, and within the city limits of Kalona and Riverside, because the landfill cannot accept material from outside that service area.
When & how
Take the machine to 3900 Hebl Avenue SW in Iowa City, open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon, and separate it from the garbage so it is charged at the exercise equipment rate.
Get it ready
Remove any console or battery pack so the electronics travel to the electronics bay instead, and keep the machine out of the bulky pile unless the scheduled pickup is cheaper for the load as a whole.
