Ready for it to go

The old sofa can stop holding up your plans.

You know it needs to go. The price, the pickup day and knowing it is done should be easy to settle, too.

A replacement is on the way.

Give the old couch its own pickup day. Check what your retailer will remove, then book the part you still need handled.

The move has enough moving parts.

You are ready for the space back.

You do not need a whole room to clear. Book the sofa, recliner or sectional that needs to go, and follow the pickup through updates and photos.

The right sofa. The right price.

Count the sections, not the cushions.

A loveseat, a sleeper and a sectional can look similar in a photo. Match the shape and features so your online price covers what is actually going.

Three structural sectional modules slightly separated, with all cushions remaining on their bases.
This example has three structural sections. The cushions do not add to the count.

A straight sofa or loveseat

Choose Standard sofa for fixed seats with no pull-out bed or reclining mechanism. One whole sofa is one item.

A sectional

Count its structural sections, not the loose cushions. Choose the piece count, then check for a sleeper or reclining feature. One sectional booking covers the configuration you select.

A pull-out bed or reclining seats

Choose Sleeper sofa or Reclining sofa for those mechanisms. A single reclining chair has its own Recliner choice. All sofa types also includes futons and sofas with a chaise.

Couches, sofas and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is booked as a bulk waste pick-up on the household's regular trash day, and the equipment used is designed to lift large furniture and appliances mechanically.

City cost & eligibility
From $25 for minimum charge for a household bulk pick-up, billed for each fifteen minutes of loading time at a rate that rises with the number of pick-ups taken during the year, with a different schedule for a pick-up booked outside the normal trash day. City of Olathe residential trash customers scheduling a bulky item pick-up through the online utility account or on 913-971-9311, with the pick-up taken on the household's scheduled trash collection day.
When & how
Schedule the bulk pick-up through the online utility billing account under Manage Services or by calling 913-971-9311, then put the furniture within eight feet of the curb before 7 a.m. on the collection day and never before 5 p.m. the day before.
Get it ready
Keep the pile clear of utilities, power poles and trees and off sidewalks, traffic lanes and gutters, set yard waste in a separate pile, and leave everything at the curb with the understanding that it will be treated as disposable. Retailer containers and bagster bags are not collected, and rock, dirt, concrete, bricks, asphalt and household hazardous waste are not accepted in a bulk pile.

Carts at the curb before 7 a.m. and back in by the next afternoon

Trash carts go to the curb before 7 a.m. on the designated collection day with the arrows pointing toward the street and three feet of space around each cart, and everything has to fit inside the cart. Recycling is collected every other week on the same day as the trash and follows the same cart rules, loose material stays loose inside the cart, containers are rinsed, mixed paper stays dry, boxes are flattened or cut down to four feet by two feet, and carts come back in by 5 p.m. the day after collection and are stored in a garage or beside the residence the rest of the time.

Bulk items go out the evening before the booked trash day

A bulk waste pick-up happens on the household's scheduled trash collection day, so items sit within eight feet of the curb no earlier than 5 p.m. the day before and no later than 7 a.m. on the day itself. The pile has to stay clear of utilities, power poles, trees, sidewalks, traffic lanes and gutters, yard waste has to be a separate pile, and the City collects the material mechanically with equipment designed for large furniture and appliances and states that it is not responsible for damage to landscaping, trees or driveways.

Yard waste is collected separately every week

Yard waste is collected weekly on the regular trash day and is kept separate from the trash. Grass clippings, leaves and small plant trimmings go in compostable paper yard waste bags or the City yard cart, plastic bags are prohibited, and limbs and brush have to be under four inches in diameter, under four feet in length and tied in bundles with string or twine weighing under fifty pounds. Sod, soil, landscaping rock and treated lumber such as fence posts, landscaping timbers and wood pallets are prohibited, holiday trees have to have their plastic bags, ornaments, tinsel and lights removed, and anything larger than the limb limit goes to the Community Recycling Center or onto a booked bulk pick-up.
