Weekly yard waste, twelve items a week

Accepted with preparation

Yard waste runs every week of the year, twelve items at a time, in a paper bag or a rigid container of thirty three gallons or less, with tied bundles of four feet, under twenty four inches around, under fifty pounds, and branches no more than three inches across. Anything beyond twelve items needs an overflow sticker.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City of Prairie Village households on the residential contract, with twelve yard waste items a week allowed year round at no additional charge. Each item beyond that needs an overflow waste sticker at $2.00 a bag, sold in sheets of five or ten.
When & how
Put the yard waste at the curb on the household's weekly collection day. The city collects solid waste, recyclables and yard waste once a week, and the day comes from the pickup schedule map.
Get it ready
Use a biodegradable paper bag or a rigid container of thirty three gallons or less, drill drainage holes in the bottom of a rigid container and use a lid whenever possible, and keep sticks and branches out of the rigid containers. Tie bundles with twine, keep them to four feet in length, under twenty four inches in circumference and under fifty pounds, and keep individual branches no more than three inches in diameter, because logs are not accepted.

Twelve yard items a week, one small bulky item a month

The two allowances are very different. Yard waste runs every week of the year at twelve items a week, in paper bags or rigid containers of thirty three gallons or less, with tied bundles of four feet, under twenty four inches around and under fifty pounds. The bulky allowance is one item a month in the first full week, and it has to be no larger than two feet by two feet and under forty five pounds.

Anything over the allowance needs a sticker

Trash that does not fit in the cart goes out in a standard bag with an overflow waste sticker, and each yard waste item beyond the twelve a week allowance needs the same sticker. The sticker price sits in the charge record. Stickers are sold at Prairie Village City Hall on Mission Road and at Westlake Hardware on Somerset and Euston Hardware on Tomahawk Road, with City Hall selling sheets of five or ten.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self haul in Prairie Village means leaving the city for two streams and using the kerb for the rest. Household chemicals go to the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment at 11231 Mastin St in Overland Park, open year round on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays by appointment through the county website or on 913-715-6907, because the city excludes hazardous waste from both the trash cart and the bulky allowance. Glass goes to the purple Ripple Glass bin at Corinth Square along 83rd Street, since curbside glass is not a city service, and the city names two licensed private providers, Crush Glass and Food Cycle KC, for anyone who wants glass collected at home. Everything else works from the kerb: trash limited to the blue cart with an overflow sticker for bags beyond it at the price carried in the charge record, unlimited loose recycling with cardboard cut to two feet by two feet, twelve yard waste items a week in paper bags or rigid containers of thirty three gallons or less with tied bundles under fifty pounds, and one small bulky item a month in the first full week, no larger than two feet by two feet and under forty five pounds, with anything bigger arranged as a special pickup through Republic on 816-521-3129. The city also runs free community composting with KC Can Compost at five parks.
