When & how
Set the wrapped mattress at the curb by 6 a.m. on your regular trash day, since bulk items are collected weekly on the same route. The cleanup weeks of May 18 to 22 and September 14 to 18, 2026 also take mattresses on the regular trash day for homes inside the city limits.
Get it ready
Wrap the whole mattress or box spring in plastic before it leaves the house, and keep the wrapped piece at the curb and not in the street. Do not put it in the recycling cart, which takes loose recyclables only, and do not leave it in the front yard between collections.
Battle Creek asks for garbage, recycling, bulk items and yard waste at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day, and the bins can go out after 1 p.m. the day before. Bulk items are weekly, and two conditions decide them
The bulk item collection runs weekly on your regular trash day, and the whole list depends on two conditions. First, the item has to be safely liftable at the curb. Second, an appliance needs its doors removed, and a refrigerator or air conditioner needs its refrigerant removed by a licensed technician who tags the unit, because the hauler states that an untagged unit will not be picked up. A wrapped mattress and dry household furniture meet the test as they are.
The spring cleanup runs the week of May 18 to 22, 2026 and the fall cleanup runs the week of September 14 to 18, 2026. Material is bagged and placed neatly at the curb for collection on your regular trash day during that week, and the cleanup is open only to homes inside the City of Battle Creek.
