Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Televisions and computer monitors

Special rules apply

The city does not collect televisions at the curb at all, so sets go to a county electronics drop-off, where flat screens are free and box-style sets are charged by size and residency.

City cost & eligibility
There is no city charge because the city collects no televisions, and the county charge depends on the set: flat screen televisions and monitors are free to drop off for residents, while box-style and CRT sets carry a fee that rises with screen size and is higher for a non-resident, so confirm the amount from the county rate sheet before the trip.
When & how
Take the set to the North Kent Recycling & Waste Center in Rockford or the South Kent Recycling & Waste Center in Byron Center during opening hours, or to the SafeChem site on Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids during its own short collection window, rather than leaving it at the curb.
Get it ready
Keep the set whole and dry, wipe stored data from anything that stores it, never put a television in the refuse or recycling cart because of the fire risk in the truck, and call Kent County public works at 616-632-7920 if the set type is unclear.

Prepare restricted items before they leave the house

Televisions of any kind are refused at the curb and go to a Kent County electronics drop-off instead, appliances holding refrigerant are accepted for recycling with the fee paid at the county scale, refrigerators and freezers lose their doors first, household chemicals and paint wait for a SafeChem collection window, and yard waste, wood, boards and construction material never go inside a city cart or a blue city bag.

Take household chemicals to a SafeChem collection site

A household holding hazardous material that cannot go in a refuse or recycling cart, including paint, chemicals, batteries, light bulbs and tubes, gasoline, fuel tanks, compressed gas tanks, mercury, medication, fire extinguishers and electronic waste such as televisions and monitors.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Kent County residents only, with no appointment needed and the program paid for by the county solid waste ordinance; businesses, schools and farms are refused and must use a commercial hazardous waste contractor.
Arrange it
Go to the nearest site during its own window: 1045 Wealthy Street SW in Grand Rapids on Monday and Thursday afternoons, Wednesday mornings and the second Saturday morning; 2908 Ten Mile in Rockford on Friday mornings; 10300 South Kent Drive SW in Byron Center on Monday mornings; 5068 Breton SE in Kentwood on Tuesdays; or 2350 Ivanrest Avenue SW in Grandville on Monday afternoon and Thursday morning. Call 616-632-7941 first for more than six boxes, more than twenty gallons or a container larger than a five-gallon bucket.

Electronics are taken only at the Grand Rapids, Rockford and Byron Center sites, the Kentwood and Grandville sites take none at all, businesses and schools cannot use the program, and latex paint is refused at every SafeChem site and has to be dried out for the trash instead.

With a new purchase

Use a retailer or reuse outlet for electronics, appliances and furniture

A household that would rather trade an item in, donate it or hand it to a retailer than drive to a county center.

Cost & conditions
The county's community resource lists publish no single rate: some outlets take electronics at no cost and others charge by item, and Best Buy, Office Depot OfficeMax and the recyclers each set their own price, so the amount has to be confirmed with the outlet before the trip.
Arrange it
The county lists Best Buy at 3410 Alpine Avenue NW, Comprenew, In The Image at 4255 Kalamazoo Avenue SE, Office Depot OfficeMax, Padnos, Valley City Electronic Recycling at 2929 32nd Street SE, Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity as outlets that may take electronics, appliances, furniture and building material, so call the outlet with the exact item first.

Some of these outlets charge for what they take, Goodwill accepts working flat screen televisions but no box-style sets, In The Image takes televisions only up to 42 inches that are cable ready with audio inputs, and working items should be donated or given away before they are scrapped.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Grand Rapids.

How much does TV removal cost in Grand Rapids?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in Grand Rapids?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

Where does a television go in Grand Rapids?

Never to the curb, because the city states that televisions of any kind are not collected curbside. Kent County takes them at the North Kent center in Rockford, the South Kent center in Byron Center and the SafeChem site on Wealthy Street during that site's hours. Flat screen televisions and monitors are free for residents, while box-style and CRT sets carry a fee set by screen size and county residency, and the county refuses commercial electronic waste from businesses, schools and non-profits.Official guidance

What cannot be put out with the trash in Grand Rapids?

Televisions of any kind, hazardous waste and tires never ride the city truck, and yard waste, wood, boards and construction material are barred from the refuse carts, the recycling carts and the blue city bags. A mattress, couch, appliance or other bulky item that will not fit in the cart needs a bulk sticker before it goes out, and refuse left outside the cart has to be in a blue city bag. Paint, chemicals, batteries and bulbs belong at a Kent County SafeChem site instead.Official guidance

Where can I take items myself in Kent County?

The North Kent Recycling & Waste Center at 2908 Ten Mile Road in Rockford and the South Kent Recycling & Waste Center at 10300 South Kent Drive in Byron Center take appliances, electronics, tires, scrap metal and compressed gas tanks, and the Grand Rapids SafeChem site at 1045 Wealthy Street SW takes electronics during its own collection window. Electronics are free for residents apart from box-style televisions, monitors and appliances holding refrigerant, mattresses and box springs are landfilled per piece, and concrete, asphalt and aggregate go to South Kent free of charge.Official guidance
