The second collection day of the week is bulky item day
Jackson collects household garbage twice a week. The first collection takes household garbage, and the second takes household garbage plus two bulk items and bagged leaves, so the bulky item day comes around every week rather than by appointment.
The regular collection day only changes when it falls on or after one of the five holidays the city observes: New Year's Day, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. When that happens, collection moves to the following collection day.
Construction, yard and chemical loads go somewhere else
Construction and demolition material, rubble and vegetation are not part of the curbside list and go to the city's rubbish disposal site in Byram, where loads are charged by the cubic yard. Household chemicals and electronics go to the Environmental Service Center on University Boulevard instead, and the city asks that nothing be left there after hours.

Jackson runs its own rubbish landfill, a Class I site at 6810 I-55 South Frontage Road in Byram. It takes construction and demolition material such as wood and metal, brick, mortar, concrete, stone and asphalt, natural vegetation including tree limbs, stumps and leaves, furniture, plastic, glass, crockery and metal other than containers, sawdust and wood chips, tires and metal appliances, with an appliance needing the motor removed first. Loads are charged by the cubic yard and tires by tire type, and the city provides mulch there free to citizens who bring a container and load it themselves. Household chemicals are handled separately at the Environmental Service Center on University Boulevard, which takes paints, oils, automotive, household and rechargeable batteries, computer and electronic equipment, four foot fluorescent bulbs and pesticides from residents.
