The city's collection, rate and code pages do not name mattresses, so a mattress has to be confirmed with the Solid Waste Division as a bulky item before it is set out, even though bulky items are collected beside the container.
City cost & eligibility
No published city rate names a mattress, and only the extra pickup rates of 24.00 for a 96 gallon container and 34.00 for a 300 gallon container plus 12.00 per minute are published, so confirm the item and how it will be billed with Solid Waste on 406-771-1401.
When & how
Confirm the item first, then put it out on the household's regular collection day with the container out no later than 7 am.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the rollout container, confirm acceptance with Solid Waste before the collection day, and have it ready 2 to 3 feet from the container near the curb.
Bulky items go beside the container, never inside it
The rollout container takes household rubbish only, and the city bars bulky items, yard waste, propane bottles and containers, and liquids such as paint and other solvents from it. A couch or another large piece is set at the curb 2 to 3 feet from the container on the regular collection day, where a separate brush truck picks up the extra items, and yard waste and bundled branches go out 4 feet from the container on the same day.
Containers go out after 6 pm and no later than 7 am
Containers may be placed out after 6 pm the evening before collection but no later than 7 am on the collection day, and they have to be taken back off the public right of way afterwards. Collection days vary by area of town, and the Solid Waste Office confirms the day on 406-771-1401. City code also requires all garbage in residential containers to be wrapped in paper or plastic, and extraordinary accumulations go in containers no bigger than 32 gallons.

No charge. City residential solid waste customers paying the published monthly rate, with the items beside the container on the regular collection day and the 12.00 per minute charge applying only when a large accumulation takes longer than two minutes to load.
Arrange it
Put the items 2 to 3 feet from the rollout container near the curb on the collection day, with the container out no later than 7 am, and call 406-771-1401 to confirm the collection day for the area.
Bulky items, yard waste, propane and liquids cannot go in the container itself, and a large accumulation that takes longer than two minutes to collect may be charged per minute.
