When & how
Confirm the machine first. If it is taken as a bulky item it goes out by 6 a.m. on the B week bulky day, and if it is scheduled as a larger load it goes out only on the arranged date.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart, drain any lawn or fitness equipment that holds oil or gasoline, and keep the pieces at least four feet from carts, fences, mailboxes, trees and vehicles. Keep the machine out of the household waste cart, where only bagged household waste belongs.
Bulky items go to the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day and sit at least four feet from carts, fences, mailboxes, trees, poles, vehicles and other obstructions so the truck arm has room to work. Rollout carts follow their own placement rules, one foot from the curb with the handles facing the residence and the lids within six to eight inches of closing.
Every bulky item has to be emptied before collection, and the city lists refrigerators, freezers, cabinets, entertainment centers and all other furniture and appliances in that requirement. Doors must be secured or removed from anything that can latch, and the county adds the same rule at the Ann Street Landfill white goods area, where refrigerators and freezers have to be empty with the doors removed.
Metal does not travel with the ordinary bulky pile. Bicycles, refrigerators, washing machines and dryers are collected only on Wednesdays, and the collection has to be scheduled on 910-433-1FAY rather than simply set out on the B week bulky day. Lawn mowers and other lawn care equipment are drained of oil and gasoline first, and concrete inside or attached to metal poles is removed.
The city states that all fees must be paid before collection, and the bulky guide adds that paid collections are set out and inspected before payment, so a scheduled load is seen at the curb first and then paid for. A load carrying construction debris, more than five bulky items or a contractor pile is refused, and a mixed pile of bulky items and other waste is not collected at all.
