Match your item

Construction cleanup starts with the right items.

We currently accept the doors, toilets and bathroom vanities listed here, already detached and ready outside. Choose each item separately. Mixed drywall, tile, concrete, lumber and demolition rubble are not accepted, including in bags.

Doors

Count each detached door panel separately. Have it removed from its hinges before pickup. A whole installed doorway or garage door is not the same item.

Toilets

Choose Toilet for an ordinary household toilet that has already been disconnected, drained and moved outside. Text a photo before booking if yours is broken or has loose sharp pieces.

Bathroom vanities

Choose the small, standard or large bathroom vanity that matches your sink cabinet. A makeup table has a separate choice. Plumbing disconnection and removal from the wall happen before pickup.

Construction and demolition material

Special rules apply

The city does not collect building material at the curb. Dirt, rocks, bricks and concrete are on its refusal list and demolition material from a contractor's job is the contractor's responsibility, so a project load goes to the county landfill, which runs a construction and demolition recovery facility.

City cost & eligibility
$61 per ton of construction and demolition debris at the New Hanover County Landfill, with the county minimum charge applied to a small load. Any customer delivering to the county scale, which charges the same per ton rate for garbage and construction debris. Clean concrete, brick and block, clean dirt, untreated lumber and pallets go to their own recovery areas at lower rates, an out-of-county load carries a flat charge on top of the tonnage, and asbestos is no longer accepted at the county landfill.
When & how
Haul the load to the county landfill at 5210 Highway 421 North on a weekday between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. or on Saturday morning, and check in at the scale so the load can be weighed.
Get it ready
Split clean concrete, brick and block, clean soil, untreated lumber and pallets from mixed debris, because each material has its own recovery area and its own rate, and unpainted or untreated lumber and pallets are recycled rather than buried. Keep asbestos, liquids and hazardous material out of the load, and note that a load creating dust, odour or extra handling draws a nuisance charge on top of the weight.

What happens at the county landfill scale

The landfill at 5210 Highway 421 North is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to noon, and the load is weighed and billed by net weight with a minimum charge. Many banned items are recycled on the same property rather than buried, so tell the scale house if the load holds appliances, tires, batteries, used oil, antifreeze, pallets or concrete, and expect a nuisance charge on a load that creates dust, odour or extra handling.

City of Wilmington Solid Waste Services with New Hanover County Environmental Management

Self-haul a load to the county landfill

A household or small contractor with construction debris, a mixed load, a mattress or an appliance that is easier to drive over than to book for pickup.

Cost & conditions
From $5 per load at the New Hanover County Landfill, where the $5.00 minimum charge applies to a small load, disposal is then billed at $61.00 per ton, and a mattress or box spring adds a flat $10.00 each, while appliances, household recyclables, used oil, antifreeze and up to five tires a day from a resident arrive at no charge. Any customer delivering to the scale at 5210 Highway 421 North. An out-of-county load carries a flat charge on top of the tonnage, and a load that creates a nuisance condition pays a flat $150 plus the weight of the load.
Arrange it
Load the vehicle, drive to 5210 Highway 421 North on a weekday between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. or on Saturday morning, and stop at the scale so the load can be weighed and the material directed to the right area.

Asbestos is no longer accepted at this landfill, and large appliances are refused at the county household hazardous waste site but accepted here at no charge. Concrete, clean dirt, untreated lumber and pallets, shingles and yard waste have their own areas and rates, and the landfill closes on the listed holidays.

Donate usable furniture or building material

A household clearing a room or a garage where the couch, the housewares or the leftover building material is still in good condition.

Cost & conditions
No charge. The donor brings the material to the store; the city and county both name the ReStore for construction materials, furniture, housewares and toys that are still in good condition.
Arrange it
Load the usable items and deliver them to the ReStore on South Third Street or Market Street, and call the store first about a large load or a piece that needs two people to move.

Only material in good condition is wanted. A heavily soiled, damaged or broken piece goes to the county landfill and is billed by weight, and the city bulky pile is the route for anything the store will not take.

Arrange a private hauler if the city does not serve the address

A household on a private street, in a multifamily property or at an address the city does not collect, where the city bulky appointment pickup and the curbside routes are not available.

Cost & conditions
A private hauler sets its own price for a collection, and the city publishes no rate for a route it does not run. The county landfill scale rate is the fallback comparison for a self-haul, so ask the hauler what it charges and where the load goes before booking.
Arrange it
Ask the property manager which company handles the building, or contact a private hauler directly, and confirm the pickup day and where the items have to be placed.

The city states it cannot collect yard waste or bulky items from an address without city trash service, and that most multifamily housing contracts with a private hauler because the city runs no dumpster service. A private street is served only if the homeowners association or neighbors petition the city successfully.

Self-hauling in Wilmington means one gate for almost everything: the New Hanover County Landfill at 5210 Highway 421 North, open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to noon. It takes municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris and bulky items such as mattresses and furniture, billing by net weight at $61.00 per ton with a $5.00 minimum and adding a flat $10.00 for each mattress or box spring. New Hanover County Landfill

5210 Highway 421 North, Wilmington, NC 28401

Municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, and bulky items such as mattresses and furniture, with special waste taken by prior authorization. The site also runs recycling areas for appliances, scrap metal, tires, car and truck batteries, used motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, cooking oil, aluminium cans, cardboard, drywall, mixed paper, plastics 1, 2 and 5, asphalt shingles, oyster shells, yard waste, clean soil, and unpainted or untreated lumber and pallets, and it sorts mixed construction loads for recoverable lumber, cardboard, concrete, brick, block, metal and drywall.

Asbestos-containing material is no longer accepted, and the North Carolina landfill ban list means motor oil and filters, yard trash, white goods, antifreeze, aluminium cans, whole scrap tires, lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries, plastic beverage containers, wooden pallets, oyster shells, computer equipment and televisions, fluorescent lights and mercury thermostats must go to the designated recycling areas rather than the working face. All customers have to be unloaded and off site by closing time, out-of-county loads carry an extra charge and are screened, and a load creating a nuisance condition pays a flat $150 plus its weight. Scale house phone 910-798-4450, special waste authorization 910-798-4453.

Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. excluding select holidays, and Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to noon. Closed on New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, with an early close on Christmas Eve.

From $5 per load at the scale, where the $5.00 minimum charge applies to a small load, disposal is then billed at $61.00 per ton, and a mattress or box spring adds a flat $10.00 each, while appliances, household recyclables, waste oil, antifreeze and up to five tires a day from a resident are accepted at no charge. Any customer delivering to the scale. An out-of-county load carries a flat charge on top of the tonnage, and clean concrete, clean dirt, untreated lumber and pallets, shingles, asphalt and residential yard waste are priced at their own lower rates.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Construction debris removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Wilmington.

How much does construction debris removal cost in Wilmington?

Pricing is per accepted item. A detached door is $99 as a single item, an ordinary toilet is $79, and a small bathroom vanity is $99. Larger vanities have their own choices. Select the listed items to see the exact combined price. These prices do not cover mixed rubble or loose building materials. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; applicable sales tax appears before payment.

Can I get same-day toilet or vanity pickup in Wilmington?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Checkout shows the dates you can choose. Arrange disconnection, removal and the move outside first, then have the fixture ready by the time in your confirmation. We text you before arrival and provide pickup photos when it is done.

Will you disconnect a sink or take a door off its hinges?

The fixture must already be detached, disconnected and accessible outside at ground level. Arrange plumbing, electrical work, removal from walls or hinges, and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb handles loading and haul-away from your outdoor pickup spot.

Can I add bags of drywall, tile or other demolition waste?

Mixed drywall, tile, concrete, lumber and demolition rubble are not accepted. This page offers pickup for the listed doors, toilets and bathroom vanities that are already removed. Do not book loose building materials as household trash bags or as an extra item. Arrange suitable disposal for those materials with your contractor or a debris specialist.

Can a door, toilet and vanity go in the same pickup?

Yes. Add each listed fixture separately and choose the correct vanity size. Each detached door panel counts as one item. The combined price appears before you book. Keep the fixtures together outside, separate from anything staying, and add a location photo on your order page.

Where does a renovation load go?

To the New Hanover County Landfill at 5210 Highway 421 North, which takes construction and demolition debris by weight and runs a recovery facility that sorts lumber, cardboard, concrete, brick, block, metal and drywall out of a mixed load. The city refuses dirt, rocks, bricks and concrete at the curb and puts contracted demolition material on the contractor.Official guidance

Can leftover building material be donated?

The city points residents with construction materials, furniture, housewares or toys that are still in good condition to Habitat for Humanity's ReStore, and the county repeats the same guidance for bulky items. Material that is unusable goes to the county landfill and is billed by weight.Official guidance

Who gets city collection in Wilmington?

Households inside the city limits on a public street that signed up for city trash service, because the monthly Solid Waste Services rate covers trash, recycling, yard waste and bulky collection. A private street is served only if the homeowners association or neighbors petition the city successfully, most multifamily housing contracts with a private hauler, and an address without city trash service cannot get the yard waste or bulky pickup.Official guidance

Who can use the county landfill and the county collection site?

Both county sites are built for New Hanover County households. The landfill takes loads from residents and businesses at the scale, while the household hazardous waste and electronics site is free to county households with identification and cannot take chemicals from businesses or from out-of-county residents. Loads arriving at the landfill from outside the county carry an extra charge and can be screened.Official guidance

How is a load charged at the county landfill?

The load is weighed at the scale and billed by net weight, with a $5.00 minimum on a small load and a flat $10.00 for each mattress or box spring. Appliances, household recyclables, motor oil, antifreeze and up to five tires a day from a resident come in at no charge, several materials including clean concrete, clean dirt and untreated lumber have their own lower rates, and a load that creates dust, odour or extra handling draws a nuisance charge of $150 on top of the weight.Official guidance
