The county landfill is the route for an address the city does not serve.
City cost & eligibility
The city includes the bulky appointment pickup in the monthly Solid Waste Services rate and describes it as carrying no additional charge, so a city trash customer is not billed separately for the piece. A mattress or box spring delivered to the New Hanover County Landfill is billed at $61.00 per ton plus a flat $10.00 for each piece, which is why the answer depends on the route.
When & how
Call 910.341.7875 by 4:30 p.m. on the business day before the trash day, or drive the piece to the county landfill, open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to noon.
Get it ready
Keep the piece dry, count a box spring as its own piece because the county charges a flat fee for each one, and leave the frame and headboard behind unless they are part of the same booked pile. Nothing on the pile may be too large or heavy for the collection crew to handle.
Everything scheduled has to be at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day, and material may be set out after noon the day before. The bulky items, the metal items, the electronics and the yard waste go in separate piles on the right-of-way because three different trucks service them, so list every item when the appointment is booked and bend or remove nails from lumber before it goes out.
The landfill at 5210 Highway 421 North is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to noon, and the load is weighed and billed by net weight with a minimum charge. No charge. City of Wilmington trash customers with curbside service on a public street, booked in advance. The city describes the bulky pickup as carrying no additional charge and includes it in the monthly Solid Waste Services rate, while a household without city trash service is not eligible.
Arrange it
Call the Solid Waste Services office on 910.341.7875 or complete the online appointment form no later than 4:30 p.m. on the business day before the trash day, list every item, then set the piles out on the right-of-way on the collection day.
The pickup is by appointment only and covers normal household items, not a whole property cleanout. Trash that did not fit in the cart is not a bulky item, nothing too large or heavy for the crew is taken, demolition material from contracted work is the contractor's responsibility, and the piles have to be separated by type.

Arrange it

Asbestos is no longer accepted at this landfill, and large appliances are refused at the county household hazardous waste site but accepted here at no charge. The city states it cannot collect yard waste or bulky items from an address without city trash service, and that most multifamily housing contracts with a private hauler because the city runs no dumpster service.
