City collection No Fargo page names a mattress. The transfer station takes furniture and large items at no charge from residents with proof of residency, Cleanup Week collects large items free in May, and the landfill bans only its published list of materials, which does not include bedding. A mattress is therefore a question for the Solid Waste office rather than a documented acceptance. No mattress rate is published and no page names a mattress. Appliance pickup in Fargo

City collection Fargo splits the appliance answer at the refrigerant line. The transfer station programme is written for non Freon appliances, the landfill and the garbage carts ban appliances outright, and the one route that names a refrigerator is Cleanup Week in May, which takes two appliances per household with the refrigerator and freezer doors removed. There is no published year round route for a unit that holds refrigerant. No refrigerant unit rate is published. Call the Solid Waste Department at 701.241.1449 to confirm the route, because Cleanup Week takes two appliances per household in May and the free transfer station programme covers non Freon appliances rather than a unit that still holds refrigerant.

The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Fargo collects the garbage itself and keeps the large items off the curb. Household garbage goes out weekly in a city cart on a volume-based rate, and anything too big for the cart has three routes. Solid Waste crews will collect small amounts of building material, furniture, appliances and automotive parts for a fee on a call-in basis only, the residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill takes furniture, large items, non Freon appliances up to two a month, metals and household garbage at no charge from Fargo residents with proof of residency, and Cleanup Week in May is the annual free collection of tires, appliances and other large items. Electronics never ride those routes, because the landfill and the garbage carts both ban them and the household hazardous waste facility at 606 43 1/2 Street North takes one computer set and one television per resident a month. Building materials are the awkward load: the crew pickup takes only small amounts, Cleanup Week and the transfer station both refuse building material and concrete, and the landfill will not take concrete, tree stumps or roots.

Couches and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture has a free year round route and a paid one. The residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill takes furniture and large items at no charge from Fargo residents with proof of residency, and Cleanup Week in May collects large items free on the recycling day. Solid Waste crews also collect furniture on a call-in basis for a fee based on amount and weight.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Fargo residents hauling their own furniture to the residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill, with proof of residency such as a City of Fargo utility bill. The Cleanup Week pile is also free with the published limits, and a crew pickup at the curb is a separate fee based on amount and weight.
When & how
Haul the piece to the transfer station during landfill hours, Monday to Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday from 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m., or set it on the boulevard before 7 a.m. on the recycling collection day during Cleanup Week. A crew pickup is booked on 701.241.1449 and billed to the utility account.
Get it ready
Separate the pile by material during Cleanup Week, keep household garbage at least four feet from the other items, and use disposable containers for anything bagged. Remove doors from any appliance in the load, keep the pile free of electronics, paint and other hazardous waste, and take beds and couches to the transfer station rather than leaving them in an alley, where apartment residents are told to ask the landlord instead.

Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and out of the garbage cart, where major appliances, tires, yard waste, lead acid batteries and used motor oil are the published bans rather than bedding. If it goes into the May pile, keep it separated from household garbage by at least four feet and set it out no more than one day early.

Washers, dryers, stoves and other appliances

Accepted with preparation

A non Freon appliance is free to drop in Fargo. The transfer station in building 4 at the landfill takes non Freon appliances up to two a month at no charge from Fargo residents with proof of residency, the landfill and the garbage carts ban major appliances outright, and Cleanup Week allows two appliances per household on the curb with the doors removed. A dealer trade-in is the city's other suggestion.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Fargo residents with proof of residency such as a utility bill, at the residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill, which takes non Freon appliances to a limit of two a month at no charge. Commercial accounts pay a disposal fee.
When & how
Haul the appliance to the transfer station during landfill hours, Monday to Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday from 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m., or set it out during Cleanup Week in May, or ask an appliance dealer about a trade-in when buying a replacement.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from anything that can latch, empty the unit and leave no food or other waste inside it, because Cleanup Week asks for both and the transfer station programme is written for non Freon units only. Keep appliances out of the garbage cart, where major appliances are a published ban.
City landfill rules page with the appliance guidance to use a dealer trade-in or the free transfer station for non Freon appliances with proof of residency, the commercial appliance fee, the two appliance Cleanup Week allowance with doors removed, the lead acid battery, motor oil, tire and yard waste referrals, and the list of materials the landfill permit forbids including lead, PCBs, soluble wastes, manure, septic tank pumpings, infectious wastes, liquids, hazardous wastes, electronics and mercury containing devices, with loads mixed with recyclables rejected until the recyclables are removed and no acceptance of concrete, tree stumps or rootsCity Cleanup Week page with the annual free collection of tires, appliances and other large items on the recycling collection day, the 2026 weeks of May 4 to 8 and May 11 to 15 following the A and B recycling calendar, the 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. collection window, the limits of two appliances per household, four tires and rims per household and logs and brush up to 10 inches in diameter, the refusal of building materials such as wood or concrete, the directions to keep electronics and household hazardous waste out of the pile, the one television and one computer per household per month at the hazardous waste facility, the charge for excessive piles, the free year round residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill for Fargo residents only with proof of residency taking non Freon appliances up to two a month plus cardboard, automotive batteries, metals, household garbage, furniture, large items and all in one recycling, the refusal of commercial waste and building materials and concrete there, the landfill hours, the household hazardous waste facility address and hours, and the separation and door removal remindersCity garbage pricing and rules page with the monthly cart fees of 7 dollars for 48 gallons, 10 dollars for 64 gallons and 15 dollars for 96 gallons charged on the utility bill, the 8 a.m. set out and 6 p.m. return, the five foot clearance around carts, the extra bag fee scheduled on 701.241.1449, the syringe rule requiring a sealed rigid container labelled medical waste inside the garbage cart, the fireplace ash rule, and the banned items list of yard waste, lead acid batteries, used motor oil, tires and major appliances including some microwave ovens

Refrigerators and freezers

Special rules apply

Fargo splits the appliance answer at the refrigerant line.

City cost & eligibility
No refrigerant unit rate is published. Call the Solid Waste Department at 701.241.1449 to confirm the route, because Cleanup Week takes two appliances per household in May and the free transfer station programme covers non Freon appliances rather than a unit that still holds refrigerant.
When & how
Ask the department first. The Cleanup Week collection runs on the May recycling collection day after a 7 a.m. set-out, and the transfer station runs Monday to Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from the refrigerator or freezer before either route, which the city asks for twice, and empty the unit so no food or other waste stays inside. Keep the unit out of the garbage cart and off the boulevard outside Cleanup Week, because appliances are a published ban for both.

Televisions, computers and other electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics go to the household hazardous waste facility on 43 1/2 Street North, not to the curb. The landfill and the garbage carts ban electronics, Cleanup Week refuses them, and the facility takes one computer set of tower, monitor and accessories plus one television per resident a month.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Fargo and Cass County residents, and Valley City residents, bringing their own household electronics to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, limited to one computer set and one television per resident per month.
When & how
Drop off at 606 43 1/2 Street North in Fargo, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and the second Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon, excluding legal holidays. The facility answers at 701.281.8915.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before the device leaves the house, and keep electronics out of the garbage cart, out of the recycling cart and out of the Cleanup Week pile, because all three exclude them. Working computers are worth offering to a donation programme, and a manufacturer trade-up is another route the city suggests.
City electronics recycling page stating that the household hazardous waste facility accepts one computer set of tower, monitor and accessories plus one television per resident per month from Cass County and Valley City residents all year, suggesting donation of working computers and manufacturer trade-up programmes, and describing Cleanup Week as the annual free chance to dispose of tires, appliances and other large itemsCity household hazardous waste page with the free year round acceptance for Fargo and Cass County residents during regular business hours, the household quantity and 220 pound per month per residence limit, the materials labelled danger, toxic, poisonous, corrosive or flammable including paints, thinners, stains, varnish, drain and oven cleaners, poisons, automotive fluids, weed and insect killer and fluorescent bulbs and ballasts, the additional acceptance of one computer set of tower, monitor and accessories plus one television per resident per month, the note that the city does not collect electronics or hazardous waste during Cleanup Week, the Valley City eligibility, the Clay County referral for Moorhead residents on 218.299.5077, and the facility address, phone and hoursCity landfill rules page with the appliance guidance to use a dealer trade-in or the free transfer station for non Freon appliances with proof of residency, the commercial appliance fee, the two appliance Cleanup Week allowance with doors removed, the lead acid battery, motor oil, tire and yard waste referrals, and the list of materials the landfill permit forbids including lead, PCBs, soluble wastes, manure, septic tank pumpings, infectious wastes, liquids, hazardous wastes, electronics and mercury containing devices, with loads mixed with recyclables rejected until the recyclables are removed and no acceptance of concrete, tree stumps or rootsCity Cleanup Week page with the annual free collection of tires, appliances and other large items on the recycling collection day, the 2026 weeks of May 4 to 8 and May 11 to 15 following the A and B recycling calendar, the 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. collection window, the limits of two appliances per household, four tires and rims per household and logs and brush up to 10 inches in diameter, the refusal of building materials such as wood or concrete, the directions to keep electronics and household hazardous waste out of the pile, the one television and one computer per household per month at the hazardous waste facility, the charge for excessive piles, the free year round residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill for Fargo residents only with proof of residency taking non Freon appliances up to two a month plus cardboard, automotive batteries, metals, household garbage, furniture, large items and all in one recycling, the refusal of commercial waste and building materials and concrete there, the landfill hours, the household hazardous waste facility address and hours, and the separation and door removal reminders

Building material and remodeling debris

Special rules apply

Fargo handles small remodeling loads only. Solid Waste crews collect small amounts of building material for a fee on a call-in basis, and the fee follows the amount and weight on the utility bill. The other city routes refuse the material: building materials such as wood or concrete are excluded from Cleanup Week, the transfer station programme refuses building materials and concrete, and the landfill will not take concrete, tree stumps or roots.

City cost & eligibility
No building material rate is published. The city states that the fee for a call-in large item pickup depends on the amount and weight and lands on the utility bill, so call the Solid Waste Department at 701.241.1449 with the size of the load before the work produces the material.
When & how
Call 701.241.1449 to arrange the pickup rather than setting material out on a garbage day. Nothing goes into the Cleanup Week pile or the free transfer station trip, both of which exclude building material and concrete, and the landfill is not an option for concrete, tree stumps or roots.
Get it ready
Keep building material out of the garbage cart and out of the May pile, separate any recyclable metal, cardboard or wood so a mixed load is not rejected, and keep paint, chemicals and liquids out of the load because they belong at the household hazardous waste facility.
City large item disposal page stating that small amounts of building material, furniture, appliances and automotive parts may be collected by Solid Waste crews for a fee on a call-in basis only, that the fee is based on amount and weight and is added to the homeowner utility bill, that extra bags up to 33 gallons cost 3 dollars each when scheduled on 701.241.1449, that apartment residents should ask their landlord, that large items may also be hauled to the sanitary landfill for a fee, and that Cleanup Week allows two appliances per household with the doors removedCity Cleanup Week page with the annual free collection of tires, appliances and other large items on the recycling collection day, the 2026 weeks of May 4 to 8 and May 11 to 15 following the A and B recycling calendar, the 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. collection window, the limits of two appliances per household, four tires and rims per household and logs and brush up to 10 inches in diameter, the refusal of building materials such as wood or concrete, the directions to keep electronics and household hazardous waste out of the pile, the one television and one computer per household per month at the hazardous waste facility, the charge for excessive piles, the free year round residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill for Fargo residents only with proof of residency taking non Freon appliances up to two a month plus cardboard, automotive batteries, metals, household garbage, furniture, large items and all in one recycling, the refusal of commercial waste and building materials and concrete there, the landfill hours, the household hazardous waste facility address and hours, and the separation and door removal remindersCity landfill rules page with the appliance guidance to use a dealer trade-in or the free transfer station for non Freon appliances with proof of residency, the commercial appliance fee, the two appliance Cleanup Week allowance with doors removed, the lead acid battery, motor oil, tire and yard waste referrals, and the list of materials the landfill permit forbids including lead, PCBs, soluble wastes, manure, septic tank pumpings, infectious wastes, liquids, hazardous wastes, electronics and mercury containing devices, with loads mixed with recyclables rejected until the recyclables are removed and no acceptance of concrete, tree stumps or roots

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

No Fargo page names exercise equipment. The transfer station takes metals such as grills, shelving, lawn mowers, patio furniture, snow blowers and bed frames at no charge from residents, and the Solid Waste crews collect large items by arrangement, but a treadmill or a weight machine is not on any published list.

City cost & eligibility
No exercise machine rate is published and no page names one. Call the Solid Waste Department at 701.241.1449 to confirm whether the machine goes with the free transfer station load or needs a paid crew pickup, which is priced by amount and weight.
When & how
Confirm the machine first, then either take it to the transfer station during landfill hours, Monday to Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday from 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m., or book the crew pickup on 701.241.1449.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart, remove or tape any battery pack, and keep metal parts together so they can travel with the metals the transfer station already recycles. Keep the machine out of the garbage cart, which takes household garbage only.

City cost & eligibility

Cleanup Week piles are separated and set out on time

During Cleanup Week each material goes in its own pile, because separate trucks collect tires, appliances, furniture, brush and household garbage. Garbage goes in disposable containers, the piles go out before 7 a.m. on the recycling collection day and no more than one day early, household garbage stays at least four feet from everything else, and refrigerator and freezer doors come off before the appliance goes out.

The free transfer station trip needs proof of residency

The residential transfer station in building 4 at the landfill is open to Fargo residents only, runs with the landfill from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, and asks for proof of residency such as a City of Fargo utility bill. Commercial waste, building materials and concrete are not accepted there even from a resident.

Call for a crew large item pickup

A household that cannot haul the item itself and wants it collected from the property.

Cost & conditions
No rate is published for the service. The city states that the fee for a call-in large item pickup is based on the amount and weight and is added to the homeowner utility bill, so call 701.241.1449 for the current figure. Extra bags outside the cart are 3 dollars each for bags up to 33 gallons.
Arrange it
Call the Solid Waste Department on 701.241.1449 to schedule the collection. The line is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday except legal holidays, and the charge lands on the utility account rather than being paid at the curb.

The service is for small amounts of building material, furniture, appliances and automotive parts rather than a whole house clearance, it has to be arranged in advance, and the household is billed for the weight collected. Apartment residents are told to ask the landlord about large item disposal instead.
