Yard waste and leaves

Accepted with preparation

Yard waste is collected from the curb on the regular trash day under bag, container and bundle rules, and the city adds a separate curbside leaf programme each autumn.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the annual trash and recycling fee. The city's yard waste drop off at the Ohio Mulch composting facility is also free to residents who show proof of residency for material larger than a quarter inch in diameter.
When & how
On the regular trash collection day for the zone. The leaf programme runs from mid October through early December with five passes through the city, and a tracking map shows when crews reach a street.
Get it ready
Use approved biodegradable yard waste bags or containers of no more than fifty pounds, cut branches to four or five feet and bundle them with twine or rope at fifty pounds or less a bundle, and mark every container as yard waste with a decal from the Municipal Services Center or a UA library. Plastic bags are not accepted and neither is yard waste mixed with trash, and dirt or mulch has to be dropped at Ohio Mulch separately rather than left for the curbside crew.

Bags, marked containers and tied bundles

Yard waste goes out on the regular trash day in approved biodegradable bags or in marked containers of fifty pounds or less, with branches cut to four or five feet and bundled with twine or rope at fifty pounds a bundle. Plastic bags are refused, a mixed yard waste and trash pile is refused, every container needs a yard waste decal, and dirt or mulch has to go to Ohio Mulch separately.

Leaf piles behind the curb, clear of the street

During the autumn leaf programme, leaves go on the grass behind the curb and no more than two feet behind it, never in the gutter or on the street, and nothing else goes in the pile. Keep leaves away from sign posts, light poles, trees and mailboxes, wait until about a week before the programme starts, and stop raking to the curb a week before it ends.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Upper Arlington runs almost everything through the one hauler, so self haul matters in two places. Yard waste that the curbside rules cannot take, and dirt or mulch that is not yard waste at all, can go to the Ohio Mulch Regional Composting Facility at 4120 Roberts Road in Columbus, where residents show proof of residency and drop accepted material free of charge, with dirt and mulch handled separately. Electronics cannot go in a cart or a bulk pile and are taken to the city's own drop off at the Public Service Center on Roberts Road on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Everything else that is refused at the curb, from construction debris to tires, scrap metal, lawn mowers, car batteries and hazardous waste, has no city route published on the pages retained here, so a resident has to look outside the city programme.
