Salem operates under a Marion County waste franchise system in which eight individually owned companies are contracted to serve specific areas, and the franchise agreement sets the service levels, pricing and performance standards while local governments regulate the fees. Weekly garbage and bi-weekly recycling come in three cart packages
Residential service packages are offered at 20, 35 and 65 gallons, each pairing a trash roll cart with a 95 gallon mixed recycling cart, and the services included with garbage service are weekly garbage pickup, bi-weekly mixed recycling pickup and, where available, bi-weekly red bin recycling pickup and weekly organic waste pickup. Sharps can be collected at the door on the regular weekly collection day, with an FDA cleared container available on request.
