Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture is named on the city's bulk waste list, with one limit that matters: the handbook allows one room of furniture. A couch, sofa or dresser goes out on a scheduled bulk day rather than in the cart, and anything beyond a single room has to be cleared with the division when the pickup is booked.
A mattress or box spring is named on the city's bulk waste accepted list, so bedding comes off the curb on a booked bulk day rather than in the cart or in the recycling. The city publishes no mattress specific rule, so the set is booked and placed like the rest of the bulk load.
Appliances are on the city's bulk waste accepted list, with two preparation steps attached: the doors come off and any Freon is removed. South Carolina also bans white goods from the landfill, which is why the county collects appliances separately at its residential centers and the Twin Chimneys Landfill rather than burying them.
Electronics are refused in the city's bulk waste collection and named in that refusal, so a television or computer never goes to the curb. The city runs free shredding and e-waste events in the spring and fall at the Public Works campus, and Greenville County takes intact electronics all year at its residential centers, with a strict limit of 10 electronic items per person at the city events.
Construction material is refused twice. The city's bulk waste page names wood pallets, lumber, brick, block, concrete, fencing, decking and shingles as not accepted, and the county residential centers take residential waste only, with no construction debris and a three cubic yard daily limit. Shingles in particular have to go to the Twin Chimneys Landfill.
The city's published accepted list does not name an exercise machine. A treadmill or weight machine is the kind of item that does not fit in a cart, but the city's accepted list names mattresses, furniture, appliances, play sets, trampolines, lawn mowers and grills without mentioning one, so the machine has to be cleared with the division before it goes out.
Tires cannot go to the curb or into the landfill, because South Carolina bans them from landfill disposal along with motor oil, car batteries, yard waste, white goods and electronics. Greenville County collects tires separately at the residential waste and recycling centers and at the Twin Chimneys Landfill, so the route is a county facility rather than the city collection.
The handoff matters
Each household gets one 96 gallon trash cart and one 96 gallon recycling cart at no cost, and only city-issued carts are serviced. Trash should be bagged and tied before it goes in, the cart goes to the curb by 7 am with the handles facing the house and the lid completely closed, and nothing may sit on top of or beside the cart. Leave three feet between the cart and obstacles such as mailboxes, poles and parked cars, and bring the cart back in within 24 hours, which the city ordinance requires.
