Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Special rules apply

The city publishes no electronics program, so a screen or computer goes to a Sullivan County transfer station or out as household junk after checking with Public Works.

City cost & eligibility
No city or county page read here publishes an electronics charge. Confirm with Public Works at (423) 989-5567 for a curbside set out or with the Sullivan County Department of Sanitation at (423) 323-6439 for the transfer stations.
When & how
Take devices to a Sullivan County transfer station during its posted hours, or ask Public Works how the city wants a screen handled on the regular collection day.
Get it ready
The city treats fluorescent and television tubes as dangerous items, so if a tube goes into a container it has to be securely wrapped and marked to protect the collection crew. Keep electronics out of the recycling and keep the device whole rather than breaking it down.

Right item.
Right place.

Protect the collection crew

Broken glass, fluorescent and television tubes, light bulbs, needles and sharp pieces of metal must not be placed in a container unless they are securely wrapped and marked so the crew cannot be injured. Garbage itself has to be drained of liquid, wrapped, bagged and put in the container.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Bristol Tennessee keeps nearly everything in its own weekly curbside collection: refuse, household junk, furniture, appliances, brush and bulk items all go out on the same day, and no request call is needed for the junk, brush or bulk. The exceptions are the items the city refuses, which are tires on rims, car parts, building materials, dirt, rock and contractor material, plus hazardous and liquid waste. Appliances and computers can also be taken to a Sullivan County transfer station, with the Bristol station at 804 Raytheon Road open 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and not closed for lunch, so confirm the days it is open on (423) 878-1880, and the county runs the household hazardous waste collection day for paint, chemicals and similar material. No fee is published on any of the pages read for this guide, so the packet asks residents to confirm charges with the city or the county before a trip.
