Brush, limbs and yard trimmings

Accepted with preparation

Brush runs on the same bi-weekly schedule as bulky items, with size limits on the wood and bagging for the soft material.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Routine residential yard trimmings are collected on the scheduled route at no separate charge in the programme, and a special or oversized brush pickup costs a published flat charge per pickup. Extra loads need a special arrangement with Public Works on 931-388-8650.
When & how
Brush goes out on the same day as the trash route every other week, at the curb by 5:00 a.m., with the day and route confirmed through Public Works.
Get it ready
Cut limbs and trees to four feet or less and no wider than three feet in diameter, and cut or mulch stumps to match. Bag leaves, grass clippings and mulch, keep brush free of household trash, furniture and construction material, and expect nothing to be collected from commercial tree contractors, landscapers, lot clearances, excavation projects or demolition work.

The handoff matters

Right item.

Cart placement and the bagging rules

Carts go to the street by 5:00 a.m. on the collection day with the white serial numbers facing the street and four feet of clearance around and between them. All trash has to be bagged inside the can and nothing is collected outside it, recycling is never bagged, and misuse of a recycling cart means the cart is confiscated. Containers come off the street once they are empty under the city ordinance.

Brush has to be cut and kept separate

Limbs and trees are cut to four feet or less and no wider than three feet in diameter with stumps cut or mulched, and leaves, grass clippings and mulch are bagged. Brush mixed with household trash, furniture or construction material is refused, and nothing cut by a commercial tree contractor or landscaper or cleared from a lot, excavation or demolition project is collected at all.

Holiday weeks move the collection day

When a holiday falls on a collection day the city empties the route on the alternate date printed in the 2026 holiday schedule, so a Thursday Thanksgiving route runs on Wednesday and a Friday Christmas route runs on the following Monday. During holiday weeks carts stay at the street until they are empty, double routes can run late, and a cart that was missed should stay out with a call to Public Works at 931-388-8650 the next business day.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self haul in Columbia means Maury County Solid Waste. The transfer station and main office at 1233 Lawson White Drive takes scrap metal at no charge and tires from a published starting price that rises by size, with a call ahead on 931-375-6401 or 931-375-6402 to confirm access and trailer space, and no bulk tires after 2 p.m. The nine convenience centres take empty refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners, televisions and other electronics, lead and lithium batteries, and latex or oil paint limited to five gallons a day per household, free of charge for county residents with proof of residency and a load no larger than two cubic yards. The city's own collection is the weekly garbage cart and the bi-weekly recycling, brush and bulky routes, and it refuses demolition debris, electronics, tires, glass and refrigerant items at the curb.
