A clear count. An exact price.

Count the bags and boxes, not everything inside.

A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.

Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture and other larger items

Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Scheduled curbside bulky item collection

Accepted with preparation

Large pieces that do not fit or belong in a cart are collected from the curb by appointment. The hauler's Des Moines list names sofas and chairs, mattresses and box springs, refrigerators and freezers, and washing machines, and each scheduled piece carries the same per item charge.

City cost & eligibility
$98.13 per item on a scheduled curbside bulky item collection, whether a sofa, chair, mattress, box spring, refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner or other appliance. Des Moines residential accounts that book the collection in advance with the hauler on 206-762-4900, because only previously scheduled items may be placed at the curb.
When & how
Call the hauler, pick the collection date, and have the item at the curb by 7 a.m. on that date. Nothing that was not scheduled is picked up.
Get it ready
Keep the item at the curb only for the scheduled date, set it where the truck can reach it without entering the property, and empty and defrost a refrigerator or freezer before it goes out. Drawers and loose parts should be secured so nothing swings open during handling.

The yearly free curbside clean-up

Special rules apply

Once each calendar year a Des Moines residential customer can book a free curbside clean-up of extra garbage plus two non-appliance bulky items such as couches or large chairs. Larger pieces are scheduled at the per item charge instead.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. One free curbside clean-up per calendar year for a Des Moines residential customer, covering up to one cubic yard of extra garbage and two non-appliance bulky items, with each bag or piece smaller than 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet or lighter than 65 pounds. Appliances are outside this allowance, and a piece above the size or weight cap is scheduled as a paid bulky item collection.
When & how
Book the clean-up with the hauler in advance, then set everything out for the agreed collection day.
Get it ready
Bag the extra garbage so it stays contained, keep every bag and bulky piece under the published size and weight caps, and leave appliances out of the clean-up pile because they follow the paid bulky route. Overflow material that is not part of the clean-up waits for the next collection or goes to the county transfer station.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress or box spring is named on the hauler's bulky item list and collected from the curb by appointment. Self hauling to the county transfer station is the cheaper published route because the station recycles the unit rather than landfilling it.

City cost & eligibility
$98.13 per mattress or box spring on a scheduled curbside bulky item collection, while a mattress, box spring or futon recycled at the Bow Lake transfer station is charged $30.00 per item. Des Moines residential accounts booking the curbside collection in advance, or any household self hauling to the county station, where a customer may bring up to six mattresses in a day before the load needs waste clearance approval.
When & how
Book the curb collection and set the mattress out by 7 a.m. on the scheduled date, or take it to the Bow Lake transfer station in Tukwila during the recycling area hours.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and put it out only for the booked date, with the springs and frame separated if they are going out separately. At the county station the recycling area takes the pieces as separate items, and a wet unit is not accepted there.

Refrigerators, washers and other appliances

Accepted with preparation

Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, washers and other appliances are named bulky items for curbside collection, and the county transfer stations recycle appliances rather than take them as garbage.

City cost & eligibility
$98.13 per appliance on a scheduled curbside bulky item collection, while a refrigerant unit recycled at the county transfer station is charged $30.00 per unit. Des Moines residential accounts booking the curbside collection in advance, or any household hauling the unit to a county transfer station with recycling, where an appliance is recycled rather than disposed of.
When & how
Book the curb collection and set the appliance out by 7 a.m. on the scheduled date, or take it to the Bow Lake transfer station during the recycling area hours.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost a refrigerator or freezer, and secure cords and shelves so nothing swings loose in the truck. Appliances do not belong in any cart, and the appliance is recycled at the county station rather than buried.

Televisions, computers and household electronics

Accepted with preparation

Televisions, computers, monitors, phones and tablets are refused at the curb and at the county garbage facilities. They are recycled free through the state electronics programme, and small units can ride with the curbside special item collection instead.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Computers, laptops, monitors and televisions at an authorised E-Cycle Washington collection site, at no charge. Household electronics returned through the hauler's curbside special item recycling must be 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet or smaller and under 60 pounds, and other equipment outside the state programme carries a fee at a Take it Back Network recycler.
When & how
The curbside special item collection runs on the household's recycling cart day, and the county electronics site hours vary by recycler, so check before loading the car.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before the device changes hands, take removable batteries out so they can be bagged and taped separately, and keep televisions and computer equipment out of the garbage cart and out of the county garbage loads because they are not accepted there.

Construction, demolition and remodel debris

Accepted with preparation

Remodel, demolition and land clearing material moves in a debris box from the hauler or goes to a county transfer station as a weighed load. The county route has firm limits on the vehicle, the length of the material and the size of the pieces.

City cost & eligibility
From $40.25 for the minimum garbage charge up to 320 pounds at a county transfer station, where construction and demolition material is weighed like garbage, with garbage at $243.38 per ton and a $25 charge on any unsecured load. A debris box is priced by container size, with a 14,000 pound load ceiling. Self hauled loads in a vehicle or trailer without a mechanised dump bed, with pieces no larger than 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet and under 200 pounds, material no longer than 8 feet, and clean wood, cardboard, yard waste and scrap metal separated for recycling. Heavier material such as dirt, concrete and brick should be collected separately from mixed debris.
When & how
Order a debris box from the hauler on 206-762-4900 for a project load, or take a household load to the Bow Lake transfer station during its station hours.
Get it ready
Do not arrive at a county station with a dump bed or dump trailer, keep every piece under the size and weight caps, cut long material to 8 feet or less, and separate clean wood, cardboard, yard waste and scrap metal because those streams are pulled out for recycling. Tarp or secure the load because an unsecured load pays an extra charge at the scale.

Passenger tires

Special rules apply

Tires never go in a cart. The county transfer stations take a small number of passenger tires from a household, either in the tire bins at the three stations that have them or as a weighed load elsewhere.

City cost & eligibility
The county publishes tire acceptance limits rather than a tire rate on its disposal fee page, so ask at the scale or call 206-477-4466 for the current charge. Tires from a business are not accepted, large truck tires are refused, and the tire bins at Bow Lake, Factoria and Shoreline take four tires per customer.
When & how
Take up to four passenger tires to the tire bins at the Bow Lake transfer station, or dispose of four or fewer per vehicle as a weighed load at another county station.
Get it ready
Keep tires out of every cart, bring them without rims if you can, and keep the load to passenger or light truck sizes because large truck tires and business loads are refused at the county stations.

Treadmills and exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is named on no Des Moines list, so a treadmill or weight machine is confirmed with the hauler before it goes out, and a heavy machine runs into the county weight threshold if it is self hauled.

City cost & eligibility
Exercise equipment is not named among the hauler's example bulky items, so call Recology on 206-762-4900 and confirm the machine and the per item charge before the collection date. If the machine is self hauled instead, note that a piece larger than 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet and heavier than 200 pounds needs county waste clearance approval before it can be dropped off.
When & how
Confirm the machine with the hauler first, then set it out by 7 a.m. on the scheduled collection date, or plan a trip to a county transfer station if the machine is light enough to qualify as a regular load.
Get it ready
Take the machine apart as far as it comes apart, keep the weights and hardware with the frame, and leave it where the truck can reach it from the street. A machine with a lot of steel and little bulk may also be worth taking to the county metal recycling bins rather than the garbage side.

Batteries, oils, styrofoam, textiles and tubes

Accepted with preparation

The hauler runs a curbside special item collection for the awkward small things that cannot go inside a cart. Batteries, motor and cooking oil, styrofoam, textiles, small appliances and electronics, and fluorescent tubes and bulbs go out beside the recycling cart by request.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Residential accounts whose garbage service includes recycling collection, with the request made by the bill payer on record, and the published limits applying to each stream.
When & how
Request the collection from the hauler, then set the material on top of or beside the blue recycling cart on the household's collection day.
Get it ready
Seal button and alkaline batteries in one bag and rechargeable batteries in another, taping the ends with clear packing tape, and keep motor vehicle batteries out. Put motor oil and cooking oil in separate leak free clear jugs with screw top lids, labeled with your name and address, up to 3 gallons of each per collection. Bag clean dry textiles, secure clean rigid styrofoam in a clear bag of about 32 gallons, and wrap tubes in newspaper and bag them, because tubes longer than 4 feet are refused and the tube limit is two per collection.

The handoff matters

Right item.

Three carts on one collection day

Food scraps and yard debris go in the green cart, clean paper and cardboard, plastic containers, glass and metal go in the blue cart, and what is left goes in the garbage cart. Recycling collection is included with the garbage service at no additional charge, and recycling that will not fit goes beside the cart in a box no larger than 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet. The hauler publishes a service day and recycling calendar for the address, and the city's recycling coordinator answers on 206-870-6595.

Book bulky items before they go to the curb

A sofa, mattress, appliance or other large piece is a scheduled collection, not a curbside free for all: call the hauler on 206-762-4900, agree a date, and put the piece at the curb by 7 a.m. that day. Only previously scheduled items are collected. Once a calendar year the same account can book a free clean-up of up to one cubic yard of extra garbage plus two non-appliance bulky items, with each bag or piece smaller than 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet or lighter than 65 pounds.

What belongs outside the carts

Batteries, motor and cooking oil, styrofoam, textiles, small appliances and electronics, and fluorescent tubes and bulbs go out through the hauler's curbside special item collection on the recycling cart day, requested by the bill payer. Televisions, computers and cell phones are refused in the garbage and at the county garbage facilities and are recycled free through the state electronics programme. Tires, paint, solvents and other hazardous products stay out of every cart and go to a county transfer station or a household hazardous waste collection instead.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self hauling from Des Moines runs through King County. Bow Lake Recycling & Transfer Station on 18800 Orillia Rd S in Tukwila takes household garbage by weight with a minimum charge for small loads, recycles mattresses, box springs and futons at a lower per item rate, recycles appliances with a per unit charge for units holding a refrigerant, takes up to four passenger tires in its tire bins, and takes construction material in a vehicle without a mechanised dump bed. Separated recyclables, clean wood and yard waste are taken at no charge, an unsecured load pays an extra charge, and a CleanUp LIFT card cuts the cost of each type of waste for households that hold one. Televisions, computers, phones and hazardous products are refused at the garbage facilities and go instead to a free state electronics collection site or to a household hazardous waste site, and the travelling collection reaches Midway Elementary in Des Moines on June 26, 27 and 28. A smaller load of awkward household items can also be handed in at the hauler's store in Burien, which takes batteries, textiles, hardcover books, small electronics and appliances, block styrofoam and bicycles. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Bulk junk removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Des Moines.

How much does bulk junk removal cost in Des Moines?

A trash bag is $59 as the first item and $10 additional. A filled household box is $59 as the first item. Add your actual items and quantities to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax is shown before payment.

Can you pick up bags of junk today?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.

Do I count every object inside a bag or box?

No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.

Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?

Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.

Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?

Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.

Schedule a bulky item collection with Recology on 206-762-4900 and put the unit at the curb by 7 a.m. on the booked date, or haul it to a county transfer station with appliance recycling, such as Bow Lake in Tukwila. Empty and defrost it, and expect a per unit charge at the county scale for anything holding a refrigerant. Appliances are never taken as ordinary garbage.Official guidance

Where do Des Moines televisions and computers go?

They are refused in the garbage and at the county garbage facilities, and they are recycled free at an authorised E-Cycle Washington collection site, which covers computers, laptops, monitors and televisions. A small unit, no bigger than 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet and under 60 pounds, can also go out with the hauler's curbside special item recycling on the recycling cart day. Wipe the device first and remove the batteries for separate handling.Official guidance

How does Des Moines handle remodel debris?

A project load goes into a debris box from the hauler, ordered on 206-762-4900, with a maximum load weight of 14,000 pounds and enough clear space for a 34 foot truck at the site. A household load can also go to a county transfer station, but not in a vehicle with a mechanised dump bed, nothing longer than 8 feet, no piece larger than 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet or heavier than 200 pounds, and clean wood, cardboard, yard waste and scrap metal have to be separated for recycling.Official guidance

Where can I take used tires in Des Moines?

To a county transfer station. Bow Lake in Tukwila, Factoria and Shoreline have tire recycling bins limited to four tires per customer, and residential customers can dispose of four or fewer passenger car tires per vehicle at the other stations as a weighed load. Large truck tires are not accepted and tires from a business are refused entirely. The county answers on 206-477-4466.Official guidance

Will Des Moines collect a treadmill at the curb?

Exercise equipment is not named on the hauler's bulky item list, so call Recology on 206-762-4900 first and confirm the machine before the collection date. If it is accepted it goes out by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day at the per item charge. A self hauled machine has to clear the county threshold, because a piece bigger than 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet and heavier than 200 pounds needs waste clearance approval.Official guidance

Where do Des Moines batteries and motor oil go?

Both ride the hauler's curbside special item collection. Request it, then set the material on top of or beside the blue recycling cart on collection day. Batteries go in sealed bags with the ends taped in clear packing tape and rechargeable cells kept separate, while motor vehicle batteries are not accepted at all. Motor oil and cooking oil go in separate leak free clear jugs with screw top lids labeled with your name and address, up to 3 gallons of each per collection.Official guidance

How is large item collection priced in Des Moines?

A scheduled curbside bulky item collection is charged per piece, whether the piece is a sofa, a chair, a mattress, a box spring, a refrigerator, a freezer or another appliance. A self hauled mattress or appliance is usually cheaper because the county transfer station recycles them at its own item rates and weighs a mixed garbage load instead. One free curbside clean-up a year covers extra garbage and two smaller bulky pieces, and Dropcurb prices a booking separately with the total shown before payment.Official guidance

Who collects garbage in Des Moines?

Recology King County holds the city contract for residential and commercial curbside collection and answers on 206-762-4900. The City of Des Moines runs the programme through its recycling coordinator on 206-870-6595. Can I take my own load to the Bow Lake station?

Yes. Bow Lake Recycling & Transfer Station is at 18800 Orillia Rd S in Tukwila, with the station building open around the clock from Monday to Thursday and the recycling and yard waste area open on its own earlier schedule. Garbage is weighed with a minimum charge for small loads, mattresses and appliances are recycled at their own per item rates, up to four passenger tires go in the tire bins, and separated recyclables, clean wood and yard waste are taken at no charge. Secure the load, because an unsecured one pays an extra charge.Official guidance
