Leaves and yard material

Accepted with preparation

Charleston gives leaves two routes: bag them and put them out on the regular trash day, or rake them to the edge of the street for the Supplemental Loose Leaf Collection that Public Works runs. Leaves should not be raked into alleyways.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city describes the leave routes as part of its regular and supplemental services and publishes no fee for either.
When & how
Bagged leaves go out on the regular trash day, and the supplemental loose leaf collection starts in early November with the 2025 run beginning Monday, November 3, weather permitting.
Get it ready
Rake loose leaves to the edge of the street, never into the alleyway, and remember that the supplemental collection is not a weekly scheduled pickup: the trucks are shared with snow removal, so collection pauses when winter weather arrives. Leaves that are bagged ride the regular trash day instead.

City of Charleston Public Works and Refuse Department, with the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority

Use the supplemental loose leaf collection

A city household with loose leaves to clear in the autumn.

Cost & conditions
No charge. The city describes the loose leaf collection as a supplemental service it provides and publishes no fee for it.
Arrange it
Rake the loose leaves to the edge of the street, never into the alleyway, and wait for the crew, or bag them and put them out on the regular trash day instead.

Seasonal and weather dependent, starting in early November, and not a weekly scheduled pickup because the crews switch to snow removal when winter weather arrives.

Charleston leaf collection answer

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self-hauling in Charleston runs through the city first and the county second. The city Refuse Department picks up furniture, appliances, televisions and tires, and the same weekly trash day carries the recycling, with cardboard, mixed paper, aluminium and steel cans and plastics numbered one and two accepted while glass and the higher numbered plastics are refused. Leaves are bagged for the trash day or raked to the street edge for the supplemental loose leaf collection that starts in early November. For anything outside those routes, the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority keeps a directory of drop-off locations, naming its own Charleston facility and West Virginia Cashin Recyclables in Nitro for common recyclables and a metals business for metal, and the authority warns that the options change often, so a call before loading is the practical step. What do I do with leaves in Charleston?

Two routes: bag the leaves and put them out on your regular trash day, or rake them to the edge of the street for the Supplemental Loose Leaf Collection that Public Works provides. Do not rake leaves into alleyways, and remember the supplemental service is not weekly because the same trucks handle snow removal.Official guidance

What will the City of Charleston pick up?

The city's own bulk answer names furniture, appliances, televisions and tires for the Refuse Department, and the weekly refuse route carries bagged household garbage with recyclables on the same day. Leaves go out bagged on the trash day or raked to the street edge for the supplemental collection, and anything else, scrap metal above all, goes through the Kanawha County recycling directory.Official guidance
