Filled bags and boxes
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard and containers
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Furniture and other larger items
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Wheeling takes bulky household items on the regular collection rather than through a separate appointment. Furniture, televisions, mattresses, box springs and couches go out one large item a week, in the same spot as the household trash, on the same truck and the same day.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. City of Wheeling households on the municipal sanitation service, which the city bills with the other utility charges. No separate bulky item charge is published, and the limit is one large item a week.
When & how
Put the item out with the regular household trash on the collection day, in the same place the trash normally sits, because the same truck takes both. Do not put anything in the alley or on the street before the day before collection.
Get it ready
Keep the set out to one large item a week, bag all household trash, and respect the published limits: no container, box or bundle over thirty gallons or two feet by four feet, and no container, box or bundle over forty pounds. Glass and sharp items go in a cardboard box rather than a bag so the worker can see them, and nothing goes in a bag where it cannot be seen. Keep building material, tires, oils, paints and other hazardous waste out of the pile, because the division refuses all of them.
Wheeling does not run a separate bulky item schedule. Furniture, televisions, mattresses, box springs and couches go out one large item a week, placed in the same spot as the regular weekly household trash, and the same truck collects them on the same day.
Bag everything and stay inside the container limits
All trash has to be bagged. Household garbage goes in leak proof watertight containers of no more than thirty gallons, a box or bundle may be no more than four feet long by two feet wide, and the city publishes both a fifty pound limit on a container, box or bundle and a refusal threshold of forty pounds. Nothing goes into the alley or onto the street before the day before collection, and the listed official holidays delay pickup by one day.
Glass and sharp items are accepted for the landfill but must not be put in a plastic bag or hidden inside a trash can. Put them in a cardboard box so the worker can see them, and even a note on the box helps prevent an injury.
The Sanitation Division refuses building materials including carpet, wood, paint, drywall, shingles, plaster and concrete, along with oils, batteries and tires, and it will not take containers, boxes or bundles over the weight limit. Tires, oils, paints and other hazardous waste go to the Ohio County Solid Waste Authority on (304) 234-3884, whose own site did not resolve when this packet was written.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
