A mattress sits far above the 40 pound bag limit, so it cannot ride with normal bagged trash. The city lists large items such as furniture for a separate scheduled trip but does not name mattresses.

Confirm the mattress and the current per-trip fee with Public Works before set-out, or take it as a residential load to the FNSB Solid Waste Facility.
When & how
Arrange the separate trip in advance with Public Works, or use the FNSB Solid Waste Facility during its open hours.
Get it ready
Do not set a mattress out with regular bags. Describe the exact size when arranging the pickup so the crew and vehicle are sized correctly.
Call Public Works first and confirm the exact items and the current prepaid trip fee. Keep the items away from sidewalks, fences and the normal bag pile, and leave refrigerant appliances on their separate borough route.
Tarp or secure the load before leaving, keep lumber, pipe and cable shorter than 8 feet, and arrive in a passenger vehicle, pickup truck or a two-wheel single-axle or four-wheel double-axle trailer. Prohibited items belong at the recycling and household hazardous waste facility, not in the waste load.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

Schedule the city large-item trip
A city residential account with a couch, mattress, large appliance or similar item that will not fit the 40 pound bag limit.
Cost & conditions
$105 for oversized garbage pickup, per trip, pre-paid. City of Fairbanks residential garbage account, arranged with Public Works before set-out. Freezers, air conditioners and refrigerators are excluded.

Call Public Works to schedule the trip and confirm the exact items before the truck is dispatched.
Only residential garbage is eligible. Business and commercial waste, construction, demolition, brick and stone material are not accepted, and the trip must be prepaid.

A borough household with a load that fits a private vehicle and can be handled at the landfill.
Cost & conditions
No charge. Residential regular solid waste at the Solid Waste Facility, 455 Sanduri Street, is listed free of charge in the FY27 user fee schedule. Commercial loads are billed by weight, and waste generated outside the FNSB needs written approval.
Arrange it
Cover and secure the load, then use the landfill at 455 Sanduri Street during its published hours.
Lumber, pipe and cable must be shorter than 8 feet, and prohibited items such as batteries, paint, oil and liquids over one gallon must go to the household hazardous waste facility instead.
Residential regular solid waste, household appliances including freezers and refrigerators, construction and demolition debris, brush, scrap metal and junk automobiles.
Waste generated outside the FNSB needs written approval. Tarp or secure every load, keep lumber, pipe and cable under 8 feet, and route hazardous waste, liquids over one gallon and other prohibited items to the household hazardous waste facility.
Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday noon to 4 p.m.; closed New Year's, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Can you pick up my old mattress when my new one arrives?+
You can choose an offered pickup day around your replacement delivery. First check whether the retailer already includes old-mattress removal, and arrange who will bring it outside if needed.
