When & how
Take the mattress to a district dumpster Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., or call 311 at (205) 254-6314 to confirm whether it can go out with the bulk pile on your neighborhood date.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and away from other material so it can be handled on its own. Confirm the curbside route with 311 first, and bag the household trash that goes with it, because loose garbage in alleys or on the ground is not collected.
Bulk trash runs separately from your weekly garbage day and follows the dated neighborhood calendar the city publishes. Put the pile out by 6 a.m. on your neighborhood's date, keep it reachable and clear of the roadway, and check the daily updates if you want to see when your area has been serviced.
Household garbage must be bagged inside the city-issued 96-gallon cart and placed in front of the home. Bags or loose material left on the ground beside the cart, on top of the cart, or in an alley are not collected, and clutter that will not fit the cart belongs in the bulk trash pile or at a district dumpster.

Birmingham residents have three municipal ways to move a large load: the neighborhood bulk trash route, the four district dumpsters, and the public unloading area at the Eastern Area Landfill. Household hazardous waste, appliances and electronics run through Jefferson County event days instead, with year-round electronics businesses listed for the rest of the year. Individuals must show a driver's license proving they live in Jefferson County, and there is no fee for residential disposal. Liquids and hazardous solid waste, compressed air containers, fluorescent bulbs, wooden doors, wooden pallets, paint, tires, batteries, construction and demolition waste, and bulk trees and brush are not accepted. Confirm the entrance and hours at the posted number before you load, because the city's pages do not give consistent addresses and closing times for this landfill.
