No city page prices a mattress. The loader truck service runs on the residential garbage account with no separate published charge and the landfill charges by weight, so Environmental Services confirms which route takes the unit and what it costs at (256) 341-4740.
When & how
Call Environmental Services at (256) 341-4740 before setting anything out, and expect the loader truck route to be unscheduled, able to arrive on any weekday and to take about two weeks once the item is at the curb.
Get it ready
Keep the unit dry and out of the rain, wrap it so it does not tear, and set it neatly where the carts are serviced and clear of fences, mailboxes, buildings and utility poles. A mattress left in a cart or set out without a call risks staying at the curb until the answer comes back from the department.
Put bulky material where the carts are serviced, and keep it neat
Place large items neatly away from fences, mailboxes, buildings and utility poles, and behind the curb when the address has no alley pickup, without blocking an alleyway. Limbs should be cut under twelve feet long and under twelve inches in diameter, and the loader truck route does not serve both the street and the alley at one address.
Have the carts out by 6:00 A.M. on the collection day with the directional arrows pointing to the street or alley, behind the curb or on the shoulder rather than in the gutter or the street, and roll them back to a safe place near the house by 7:00 P.M. Bag household garbage, keep lids closed with nothing protruding, and keep carts away from buildings, fences, mailboxes and utility poles.
Liquids, ashes and building material stay out of the carts
Never place paints, solvents, flammable or other liquids, ashes, dead animals, oils or medical waste in a cart, and never fill a cart with building materials such as lumber, dirt, concrete or rocks. Those streams have their own route: the monthly household chemical collection takes paint, oil, cleaners, fuels, pool chemicals, pesticides and batteries, and the landfill refuses liquid and hazardous waste outright.
A holiday moves collection back a day, and Friday pickups move to Monday
When a holiday falls on a scheduled garbage day, the collection is generally rescheduled for the following day, except for Friday pickups which move to the following Monday. The 2026 calendar marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day with no changes and lists the shifted routes for New Year's Day, Juneteenth, the observed July 4th holiday, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Cover the load and bring a card, not a check, to the landfill
Every vehicle entering the Morgan County Regional Landfill has to be properly covered and secured, tailgates closed and tarp used as needed. Payment at the gate is cash, Visa, Discover or MasterCard, and checks are no longer accepted, with a minimum charge on small loads and a separate rate for tires and for approved asbestos.

A Decatur household that hauls its own load drives to the Morgan County Regional Landfill at 500 Landfill Drive in Trinity, open Monday to Friday from 6:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. and Saturday from 7:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., with hand-unloaders required through the gate 30 minutes before closing.
