Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

  2. Choose a permitted outdoor spot.

Use a stable, accessible location with a clear path for loading. Keep the TV separate from anything staying. Check building rules before placing it in a shared pickup area.

Televisions and large electronics

Special rules apply

Televisions are refused at the city's recycling centers. The city directs televisions and other large electronics to a specialty recycler in Chickasaw and also names older routes through a charity and a retailer.

City cost & eligibility
The city lists a disposal fee only for CRT televisions at the specialty recycler and a recycling fee at the retailer it names, so confirm the current charge and the accepted device with the route you choose.
When & how
Confirm the route, hours and charge before loading, because the city recycling centers will not take a television.
Get it ready
Never leave a television at a city recycling drop-off and never mix it into a trash pile or the garbage cart. Ask about home pickup for an elderly or disabled resident when you call the charity route.

Right item.
Right place.

What must stay off the pile and the cart

Do not put electronics, appliances, paint, tires, glass, sinks, bathtubs, HVAC units, sheetrock, insulation or fencing on the trash pile or in the garbage cart. The city leaves the entire pile when prohibited items are mixed in, and appliances that hold refrigerant are not picked up at all. Household chemicals, batteries and paint belong at a household hazardous waste collection event.

Check the retailer television recycling route

A household with a CRT television or an older set that the city recycling centers will not take.

Cost & conditions
$25 per CRT or older television recycled at the retailer named on the city trash rules page. Confirm the store still accepts the set and that the recycling desk is staffed before loading, because the city page lists the fee but not the store hours.
Arrange it
Call the Geek Squad desk number on the city trash rules page to confirm the program, then take the set to the store.

The city page names this route only for CRT type and older televisions, and it is a retailer program rather than a city service, so the store can change its acceptance rules.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Mobile residents can self-haul, and the city lists four area landfills with their addresses, phones and hours on one page. Only the Chastang Landfill listing includes household garbage alongside trash and demolition debris; the other three are listed for trash and demolition debris only, and the page carries no fee schedule for any of them, so confirm the price and the accepted material before leaving. Recycling and residential electronics are the exception at the curb, because the three city drop-off centers take them free from Mobile residents.
