Opelika defines trash as limbs, grass clippings, furniture and appliances, metal objects and other non-hazardous material, so a sofa, couch or upholstered chair is a trash item rather than a garbage-cart item. Trash rides the same weekly route as the yard waste on the same day as the garbage cart.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential collection service billed through Opelika Power Services, which covers the weekly cart and the trash and yard waste route, with a limit of five cubic yards of trash and yard waste per address each week. The city publishes no per-item furniture charge for an ordinary set-out.
When & how
Put the piece out on your normal collection day. Trash and yard waste are normally collected the same day as the garbage cart, though the city warns that leaf season, holidays and severe weather can push a pickup later in the week or delay it for several weeks.
Get it ready
Keep the pile at least five feet from mailboxes, power poles, tree lines and parked vehicles, and keep it out from under power, cable and phone lines, because crews will not collect trash under them. Bag or box anything loose that could blow away or wash toward a storm drain.
Bagged household waste belongs in the 95-gallon cart, and everything else the city hauls is trash: limbs, grass clippings, furniture, appliances, metal objects and other non-hazardous material. Trash goes out on the same day as the garbage cart and is handled by the knuckle-boom trucks, so a couch or a mattress never belongs in the cart and garbage never belongs in the trash pile.
Trash needs at least five feet of clearance from mailboxes, power poles, tree lines and parked vehicles, and crews will not collect a pile that sits under power, cable or phone lines, behind a parking space or on a vacant lot. Anything loose enough to blow away or wash down a storm drain has to be bagged or boxed, and styrofoam always has to be bagged. The garbage cart itself goes out by 6:30 a.m. on the collection day and comes back to the house the same day, or a 10 dollar service fee applies.

Will you carry my couch out of my apartment?+
Dropcurb starts outside. Arrange for the sofa to be moved through the apartment and down interior stairs before pickup. We load and haul it away from an accessible outdoor spot. Arrange any dismantling needed to get it outside beforehand.
Do I need to wait at home for couch pickup?+
You do not need to be home when your booked sofa is outside and accessible. Add photos and pickup-location notes to your order so the right pieces are easy to identify. We send updates and completion photos. Confirm any building access restrictions with us before booking.
Will the city take a couch or a sofa from the curb?+
Yes. Furniture is named in the city's own definition of trash, and trash is collected on the same day as the garbage cart with the yard waste.
