Mattresses are not named in the city's definition of trash or in the accepted list at the two recycling centers, so a bed has to be confirmed before it goes out. Furniture, appliances and other non-hazardous material are the categories the city does name.
City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no mattress rate and does not list mattresses among the materials it collects or accepts at a recycling center. Confirm the unit with Opelika Environmental Services at 334-705-5480 before it goes to the curb.
When & how
Call 334-705-5480 during business hours, and if the unit is accepted put it out on the normal collection day. The Jeter Avenue center takes drop-offs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., but its accepted list names appliances and tires rather than mattresses.
Get it ready
Keep the unit dry and set it where a knuckle-boom truck can reach it without blocking the right of way, with the same five feet of clearance from mailboxes, poles, vehicles and tree lines. Say whether it is a mattress alone, a box spring or a wet and soiled unit when you call.
Bagged household waste belongs in the 95-gallon cart, and everything else the city hauls is trash: limbs, grass clippings, furniture, appliances, metal objects and other non-hazardous material. Trash goes out on the same day as the garbage cart and is handled by the knuckle-boom trucks, so a couch or a mattress never belongs in the cart and garbage never belongs in the trash pile.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

You can choose an offered pickup day around your replacement delivery. First check whether the retailer already includes old-mattress removal, and arrange who will bring it outside if needed.
