Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and out of the bagged leaf and limb pile, because mixing the streams draws a written notice the first time and a fee the second. The city publishes no bagging requirement for a mattress.
Each household gets one city 96-gallon bin with weekly automated collection, and the bin is city property. Garbage has to be bagged and sealed, the lid has to close without straps or bungee cords, and boxes go broken down into the recycling cart. The bin sits within five feet of the street edge with the handle facing away from the street, three feet from any other cart or obstacle, and never under tree limbs or overhead lines.
The city collects green waste and bulky items as separate streams on the same pass, one day after the garbage day. Keep them three feet apart, put the non-green bulky items out only one day before the collection, and keep the green waste out of the street and the gutters.
