Accepted with preparation
Appliances that do not contain freon, including stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters, water softeners and microwaves, are named on the hauler's acceptable bulk list. A refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner is refused and takes a different route.

Get it ready
Empty the unit and remove anything that could trap a person or an animal. Keep appliances out of the household container, and route anything holding refrigerant to the evacuation and tagging process instead of the bulk pile.
The hauler refuses appliances that contain refrigerants, listing freezers, refrigerators and air conditioners as unacceptable in both the container and the bulk pile. Maricopa County accepts them at its transfer stations only when the refrigerant has been evacuated, the compressor removed and the unit tagged to EPA rules with documentation provided.

Get it ready
Do not put a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner in the household container or on a bulk pile, because the hauler will not collect it. Arrange the evacuation and compressor removal with a qualified technician, carry the documentation to the gate, and remember that the county refuses bulk freon containers, batteries and household hazardous waste.
Out by 5:30 a.m., under 50 pounds, and clear of the container
Sun City West households use either an underground container or a curbside barrel, depending on the address. Items must be out no later than 5:30 a.m. on the service day, the load should stay under 50 pounds, and the area around the container has to be clear of plants and parked vehicles. Dirt, rock, concrete, construction debris and sod, flammable liquids, hot ashes and hazardous material never go in the container.
Put the pile at the front of the property near the sidewalk or the curb, never in an alleyway, stacked neatly and parallel to the street. Keep it below four feet high, keep everything shorter than four feet except bulky pieces such as a couch, and leave at least five feet from water meters, cable boxes, fire hydrants, block walls, fencing, sprinklers and landscaping, with no vehicle within ten feet. Bag and tie yard clippings, cut limbs into four-foot segments under eight inches across, and sweep up what the crew leaves behind.
What to expect at a Maricopa County transfer station
County transfer stations are open to all Maricopa County residents and ask for identification only at the recycling centers, with payment by debit or credit card and no cash accepted. The load is measured on the cargo area of one vehicle or trailer, so a separated load is easier to unload and easier to price. Arrive early enough to finish unloading before closing, and separate recyclables and electronics so they can go into the designated areas.
