Small appliances without Freon, washers and microwaves are on the accepted bulk trash list. A refrigerator, freezer, dehumidifier or air conditioning unit is refused in the bulk pile because it contains Freon, and those units go to the Household Products Collection Center instead, which the city names specifically so residents avoid transfer station disposal fees.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Non-Freon appliances are included in the every other month bulk trash collection. The Household Products Collection Center accepts refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, water heaters, stoves, dishwashers, air conditioning units and microwaves from Tempe and Guadalupe residents with proof of residency, and the Sky Harbor Regional Transfer Station charges separately for an appliance containing Freon.
When & how
Non-Freon appliances go out with the bulk trash week by 6 a.m. on the Monday of the scheduled week. A Freon unit goes to the Household Products Collection Center at 1320 E. University Drive, open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Get it ready
Empty the unit before it leaves the house, keep a refrigerator, freezer, dehumidifier or air conditioner out of the bulk pile entirely, and arrive at the center with identification ready because the site serves Tempe and Guadalupe residents only. Material goes in the rear-most part of the vehicle in cardboard boxes, never in plastic bags.
The bulk pile has a two week window and a hard limit
Bulk trash and green organics go out by 6 a.m. on the Monday of the scheduled collection week and no earlier than 10 days before it, and a holiday in that week does not move the collection. The pile is limited to 10 cubic yards, which the city describes as the size of a small SUV, and the city moves each address on its own every-other-month schedule rather than every week.
Trash and green organics go into two distinct piles four feet apart, and every item stays four feet away from a solid waste container, fire hydrant, gas meter, telephone or utility box. Nothing goes over a manhole cover, curbside addresses keep the pile on the property line in the street or at the front edge of the driveway without blocking the sidewalk, and alley addresses keep it along the fence line without blocking the alley.
The Household Products Collection Center and the Zero Waste Day event use the same procedure: have identification ready, load the material into the rear-most part of the vehicle such as the truck bed, trunk or rear hatch and never the front or back seat, transport it in cardboard boxes rather than plastic bags, and stay in the vehicle while staff unload. Boxes are not returned, and the center refuses items that arrive in garbage bags.

The center takes only residential material, refuses items in garbage bags, construction debris, insulation, ammunition, medical waste and non-propane gas cylinders, and will not take a container larger than five gallons, so a bulk container needs a call to 480-858-2223 first.

Mattresses are expressly refused at the event, as are bulk trash, car seats, small foam items and anything from a commercial or industrial business, and accepted items can change from event to event.

Only the account holder may dispose of the waste, with the most recent Tempe utility services bill and a matching driver license. Commercial-collection addresses, contractors, landscapers and businesses pay the gate rate instead. Soil or dirt, hazardous waste, batteries, liquid waste, enclosed containers and barrels, car bodies, large demolition debris, tires and electronic waste are refused, and a safety vest is required with a hard hat added for a dump trailer, both sold at the facility by credit card only.
Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed Sundays and major holidays, with the final load arriving within 30 minutes of closing.

Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.
