Appliance recycling pickup

Tell the provider exactly what you have and whether it works. Confirm collection separately from drop-off acceptance: a recycling facility that accepts appliances may still require you to deliver them.

Check the program run by your own utility, rather than assuming an offer from another state applies. For example, PSE&G’s appliance recycling program limits household refrigerator and freezer collections to qualifying working units between 10 and 30 cubic feet, up to two per calendar year. Customer eligibility also applies.

If a new appliance is already on order, check whether old-appliance removal is included or can be added. Delivery, installation and haul-away are separate questions. A delivery confirmation alone does not answer all three.

If the delivery has already happened, contact the retailer about the existing order before paying someone else. Explain what removal service was purchased and what remains to be collected.

Refrigerators, freezers and some other cooling appliances need more than ordinary metal collection. The EPA’s appliance disposal guidance explains that refrigerants must be recovered appropriately before disposal. Ask the collector how the appliance will reach a suitable processor.

Leave the cooling system intact. Do not cut lines or remove the compressor to make an appliance lighter. A planned handoff to an appropriate collector is more useful than leaving a refrigerator outside and assuming whoever takes it will handle it correctly.

First, confirm acceptance of the exact appliance and its condition. Second, confirm the complete collection price or the conditions for free collection. Third, agree on the preparation: disconnection, emptying and any required defrosting. Fourth, confirm where the crew collects from and who handles the move to that point.

Follow the chosen provider’s instructions. Some utility programs need to verify that an appliance works, so unplugging it too early can interfere with their process. A retailer may have different rules.

Arrange qualified help for gas connections, hardwired equipment or other work you cannot safely handle. Pickup should be the last part of a prepared handoff, not the moment everyone discovers the unit is still installed.
