Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and strap it for the drive, and keep it out of an Environmental Recycling Day load, because mattresses are on that event's unacceptable list. Payment at the transfer station is by credit or debit card only.
Cupertino households get two on-call collections a year at no additional charge, limited to three bulky items per collection, and every collection has to be booked with Recology at least 24 hours ahead and placed on private property at the driveway entrance by 7 AM. Loose pieces must fit inside an area 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet high, and each item must stay under 50 pounds and under 6 feet. Further collections cost more, extra garbage needs a purchased Extra Bag Tag, and nothing bulky goes to the curb before the pickup is scheduled.
The city and Recology run a free drive-through drop-off at De Anza College, 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd., from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the next published date is November 14, 2026. Cupertino residents bring identification such as a driver's licence or a current collection bill and unload their own vehicles. The event takes e-waste and U-waste, kitchen appliances without freon, up to 2 cubic yards of construction debris with untreated wood, dirt, rock and concrete, yard waste, three boxes of documents for shredding, and reusable goods in good condition. Mattresses, freon appliances, painted or treated wood, baby items and broken or disassembled items are refused.
