The local disposal guide
El Cajon collects waste through a single franchise hauler. The city holds an exclusive franchise for solid waste disposal and recycling with EDCO, which moved into the city on January 1, 2021, and a single-family home gets a gray trash cart, a blue recycling cart and a green organics cart with weekly collection. Everything too large for the carts goes on a free bulky item pickup, worth four collections a year of up to six items each, and mattresses ride that route with a wrap requirement. Household hazardous waste, batteries and electronic waste never go in a cart: El Cajon residents can take them to the hauler's appointment-only drop-off in the city, free of charge.

Construction material is refused on the bulky route, and the hauler provides temporary dumpsters and roll-off boxes instead, including for a small amount of waste from a home remodel.
Exercise equipment is not named on the hauler's bulky list. It is a large household item, so it fits the free bulky pickup only if the hauler confirms it and it stays within the allowance.
The handoff matters
Set the carts out at street level with the wheels against the curb and the lid arrows facing the street, at least two feet apart and three feet from parked cars, mailboxes, trees and poles, and never overfilled so the lid stays open. Everything goes out by 6:00 a.m. on the service day or the night before.
