Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

A water heater is one of the city's own examples for the bulky item service, and the hauler's list adds refrigerators, freezers, ranges, microwaves, washers and dryers. Each unit counts as one of the six items allowed at a collection.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free to single-family residences in Lakewood, inside the six bulky item collections allowed each calendar year and the six item limit at each one. The city publishes no separate refrigerant charge for this route.
When & how
Book the pickup with EDCO at 562-531-3054 by 3:30 p.m. one day before the regular trash collection day, and ask about the refrigerant unit when the items are described.
Get it ready
Keep the appliance out of the three carts, set it at the curb with the carts by 7 a.m. on the collection day, and confirm with EDCO whether anything has to be done to the unit before the crew arrives.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Book the day before and be out by 7 a.m.

A bulky item pickup in Lakewood is booked with EDCO at 562-531-3054 by 3:30 p.m. one day before the regular trash collection day, and a single-family residence gets up to six of those collections a year with up to six items at each one. The items go to the curb alongside the carts by 7 a.m. on the collection day, and the hauler asks residents to describe what is being discarded so a reusable piece can go to a charity or a shelter instead of the landfill.

Cart placement for the weekly collection

Carts go to the curb in front of the home before 6 a.m. on the service day, in the street with the wheels against the curb and out of the way of traffic including bike lanes. The arrows on the lid point toward the street, carts stay at least two feet apart and at least three feet from parked cars, mailboxes, trees, telephone poles and other obstructions, and the lids close with nothing packed so tightly that it cannot fall out when the truck lifts the cart. Hot ashes, coals and fireworks never go in a cart.

What goes in each cart page with the cart set-out geometry, the cart sizes and contents, the hot ash rule and the extra cart terms

Six categories the bulky truck will not take

The city lists six refusals for a bulky item pickup: hazardous waste, old auto parts, machinery and other industrial items, oil, grease and other liquids, building materials such as bricks, lumber, roofing materials, dirt and broken concrete, and excessively large items such as whole tree trunks and large limbs. Electronics, fluorescent bulbs, medication and needles are refused as well, and each of those has its own route rather than a place in the pile.

The Christmas weeks run on their own rules

Bulky item pickup pauses for the Christmas tree recycling program after Christmas Day and resumes in January. During that program EDCO collects discarded trees on the regular trash day for one week after Christmas, with ornaments, tinsel and metal or plastic stands removed, wooden stands left in place, nothing bagged, and any tree over six feet cut in half. In the same week EDCO takes extra holiday trash on the regular pickup day at no charge, up to 10 standard size bags about two feet from the cart, with no call needed in advance.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self-hauling in Lakewood means driving to the EDCO transfer station at 2755 California Avenue in Signal Hill, which takes large and oversized amounts of brick, used lumber and other material that will not fit the carts or ride the bulky pickup, plus large amounts of clean green waste that can be recycled into mulch and carries a dumping fee. Waste disposal runs Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the redemption value buy-back runs Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the household hazardous waste, electronic waste and sharps drop-off runs on designated Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with no charge and with the 2026 and 2027 dates printed by the city. A mattress or other bulky item is free on the curbside route for a single-family residence, so the transfer station is the paid path for an apartment or condominium household or for oversize material. Construction is regulated separately: a covered project files a Debris Recovery Plan through GreenHalo, has to recycle or salvage at least 65 percent of its nonhazardous debris, and can only use EDCO or self-haul with its own vehicles, which needs the current vehicle registration, current vehicle insurance and a photo of the vehicle with the license plate visible. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Appliance removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Lakewood.

How much does appliance removal cost in Lakewood?

A full-size household refrigerator is $109 as a single item. A washing machine is $109, and a dryer is $109. Other appliances have their own catalog prices. Choose each item to see your exact total before booking; disposal and recycling costs are included in the item price.

Can I get same-day appliance pickup in Lakewood?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Checkout shows the dates you can choose. Your pickup is scheduled for a day rather than an exact arrival appointment, and we text you before arrival. Have the appliance disconnected and ready outside by your pickup readiness time.

Can you take a washing machine and dryer in one pickup?

Yes. Add one Washing machine and one Dryer so both units are included in the price. They are separate items, even when you bought them as a set. If yours is a single combined unit or the machines still need to be unstacked, contact us before booking to confirm the scope.

Will you disconnect my appliance or carry it out?

Dropcurb picks up appliances that are already disconnected and accessible outside at ground level. Arrange uninstallation, utility disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Use a qualified professional for gas, hardwired or plumbing connections when needed. We handle loading and haul-away from the outdoor pickup spot.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?

Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.

Will Lakewood take an old refrigerator or water heater?

Yes. A water heater is one of the examples the city gives for the bulky item service, and the hauler's bulky list names refrigerators, freezers, ranges, microwaves, water heaters, washers and dryers. A single-family residence uses one of the six free collections a year and books it with EDCO at 562-531-3054 by 3:30 p.m. one day before the regular trash day, with the unit at the curb with the carts by 7 a.m.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Lakewood?

EDCO Waste Services is the city's franchise hauler for trash, recycling, green waste, bulky item pickup and the temporary dumpsters, and questions about a missed collection, a cart or a pickup go to EDCO at 562-531-3054 from Monday to Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. or Saturday between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. The City of Lakewood Public Works refuse team can be reached at 562-866-9771, and the city runs the recycling rules and programs.Official guidance

How do I schedule a bulky item pickup in Lakewood?

Call EDCO at 562-531-3054 by 3:30 p.m. one day before your regular trash collection day. A single-family residence gets up to six free collections a year with up to six items at each one, and the items go to the curb alongside the carts by 7 a.m. on the collection day. The city lists mattresses, water heaters, sofas and chairs as examples, and the hauler's list adds carpet, rugs, book shelves and appliances. Apartment and condominium residents do not qualify and go through the property manager instead.Official guidance
