Get it ready
Tape the terminals on lithium, six volt and nine volt alkaline batteries and put them in a clear zipper-lock bag beside the clean-up bags, not in the gutter. Keep hazardous waste out of every cart, bin and bag, and clear personal data before handing over a computer or drive.
Bags are filled at the curb and nothing heavy goes inside
The bag option works on a weight and size rule. Two company-provided 1.5 cubic yard bags, or up to fourteen of your own 32-gallon bags, are filled at the curb and not more than twenty-four hours before the scheduled collection, everything has to fit inside without protruding, and anything over 75 pounds cannot go in a bag at all. Loose material placed outside the bags is refused, wood has to be shorter than three feet, and treated wood waste, automobile parts, dirt, sod, cement, rock, brick and hazardous waste never belong in a clean-up. Bags and items are at the curb by 6:00 a.m., with vehicles moved clear.
Hazardous waste does not belong in any cart, bin or bag. Paint, petroleum products, acids and bases, batteries, poisons, pesticides, pool chemicals, solvents, fluorescent lamps, propane and sharps go to Santa Clara County's household hazardous waste programme, which is free with an appointment and also takes e-waste. Medications are no longer accepted at the county's San Jose and San Martin permanent facilities. For reusable items, the Goodwill store at 311 W Calaveras Boulevard takes clothing, housewares, electronics including working and non-working sets, printers, microwaves, vacuums, sellable furniture and small appliances, while it refuses large appliances, large furniture, batteries, liquids and hazardous chemicals.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Four free bulky item cleanups per rolling twelve-month period for single-family residential customers, spaced at least eight weeks apart. Each clean-up covers one large item or two 1.5 cubic yard bags on the city page, and the hauler's page allows up to three bulky items or up to fourteen 32-gallon bags. Extra clean-ups and additional items carry a fee.
Arrange it
Call Milpitas Sanitation at 408-988-4500, have the bags delivered if that option is used, fill them at the curb up to twenty-four hours ahead, and put everything out by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled day.
