Ready for it to go

The old sofa can stop holding up your plans.

You know it needs to go. The price, the pickup day and knowing it is done should be easy to settle, too.

A replacement is on the way.

Give the old couch its own pickup day. Check what your retailer will remove, then book the part you still need handled.

You do not need a whole room to clear. Book the sofa, recliner or sectional that needs to go, and follow the pickup through updates and photos.

Count the sections, not the cushions.

A loveseat, a sleeper and a sectional can look similar in a photo. Match the shape and features so your online price covers what is actually going.

Three structural sectional modules slightly separated, with all cushions remaining on their bases.
This example has three structural sections. The cushions do not add to the count.

A straight sofa or loveseat

Choose Standard sofa for fixed seats with no pull-out bed or reclining mechanism. One whole sofa is one item.

A sectional

Count its structural sections, not the loose cushions. Choose the piece count, then check for a sleeper or reclining feature. One sectional booking covers the configuration you select.

A pull-out bed or reclining seats

Choose Sleeper sofa or Reclining sofa for those mechanisms. A single reclining chair has its own Recliner choice. All sofa types also includes futons and sofas with a chaise.

On Call Plus cleanups and bulky goods

Accepted with preparation

Two appointment based cleanups a year take a pile up to four by four by eight feet plus up to three bulky goods such as furniture or appliances.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Two cleanups a calendar year at no additional charge for houses of one to eight units, condominiums, townhouses and mobile homes, including the bulky goods truck. Apartments of nine or more units are excluded but a manager may arrange a complex wide special collection for a fee, and extra pickups are available for a fee.
When & how
Book the appointment with Recology at 650-967-3034 before anything is set out, and have everything at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on the scheduled collection day. Appointments are not transferable and expire in mid-December, and no appointments run between December 26 and the third Friday in January, when a voucher is the alternative.
Get it ready
Keep the pile inside four feet high by four feet wide by eight feet long, with bags, boxes and bundles under 50 pounds each and carpet tied into bundles no longer than four feet and six inches in diameter. Additional cleanup pickup or full service cleanup

Households that have used the two free cleanups or that want the hauler to do the lifting.

Cost & conditions
The City rate page lists bulky service as varying and the hauler only states that additional pickups are available for a fee, so no amount is published. The City also lists a RecycleMyJunk service that is quoted per job. Call Recology at 650-967-3034 for the current price.
Arrange it
Call the hauler to book the extra pickup or to request a RecycleMyJunk estimate, and confirm the amount before the work is scheduled.

The same item limits and exclusions apply to a paid pickup as to a free cleanup, and an item over 200 pounds or longer than five feet can still be refused or charged extra.

Free SMaRT Station dump voucher

Households that would rather haul it themselves, including during the winter pause on cleanup appointments.

Cost & conditions
No charge. One free vehicle entrance at the SMaRT Station per voucher, covering the same items as a cleanup appointment including bulky goods and electronic waste. An uncovered load carries a published fee.
Arrange it
Ask Recology for the voucher at least a week ahead or collect it at the Mountain View Recycling Center at 935 Terra Bella Avenue, then show proof of residency at the scale house, weigh in and weigh out, and cover the load.

Vouchers are not transferable, expire December 31 with a one week grace period in January, and the load still has to be material the SMaRT Station accepts.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Mountain View residents can self haul in three ways. A cleanup appointment can be exchanged for a voucher that covers one free vehicle entrance at the SMaRT Station in Sunnyvale, where the same items are accepted including bulky goods and electronic waste, proof of residency is required, the load has to be covered, and disposal is charged by material type. The Mountain View Recycling Center on Terra Bella Avenue takes mattresses, box springs, household appliances, untreated lumber, electronics and good condition furniture free by appointment for residents. The Recology South Bay Transfer Station at 1675 Rogers Ave in San Jose takes any condition furniture, appliances, carpet, wood, construction debris, sheetrock, garbage and yard trimmings for a fee with no appointment, credit or debit only. Household hazardous waste is handled separately, by appointment through the Santa Clara County program at 408.299.7300. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Couch removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Mountain View.

How much does couch removal cost in Mountain View?

A standard sofa is $79 as the first item and $29 additional. Sectionals, sleepers and reclining sofas have their own choices. Select everything that is going to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax appears before payment.

Can you pick up my couch today?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the couch outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We send pickup updates and photos when it is done; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.

How do I book a sectional for removal?

Open Sectional in the sofa choices, count its structural sections, and select any sleeper or reclining feature. Count the sections with their own bases, not loose cushions. The matching catalog choice covers one complete sectional of that configuration. Text a photo before booking if you are unsure.

Will you carry my couch out of my apartment?

Dropcurb starts outside. Arrange for the sofa to be moved through the apartment and down interior stairs before pickup. We load and haul it away from an accessible outdoor spot. Arrange any dismantling needed to get it outside beforehand.

Do I need to wait at home for couch pickup?

You do not need to be home when your booked sofa is outside and accessible. Add photos and pickup-location notes to your order so the right pieces are easy to identify. We send updates and completion photos. Confirm any building access restrictions with us before booking.

How many cleanups does Mountain View allow?

Two cleanups a calendar year at no additional charge for houses of one to eight units, condominiums, townhouses and mobile homes. Each one takes bagged or boxed material in an area no larger than four feet high, four feet wide and eight feet long plus up to three bulky goods.Official guidance

What counts as a bulky good?

Items such as couches, chairs, mattresses, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, dryers, water heaters, computers and televisions. The City's chart lists them as no fee items, including up to four passenger tires, a lawnmower and a barbecue.Official guidance

What will not be collected on a cleanup appointment?

Concrete, soil, rock and tree stumps, household hazardous waste such as paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, solvents and fertilizers, creosote timbers, vehicle parts or batteries, fluorescent tubes, and construction material too large, heavy or dangerous for the pickup. The hauler also lists hazardous material, construction and demolition, liquids, rock and material longer than five feet as not accepted.Official guidance

Can usable items be donated in the pickup?

Yes. Good condition clothing, shoes, accessories, luggage, kitchen equipment, small appliances, electronics 21 inches or smaller, sporting equipment, tools and musical instruments may be set out together and labeled for donation so they are routed to reuse rather than disposal.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Mountain View?

Recology Mountain View is the exclusive franchised hauler and can be reached at 650-967-3034. The City's Utility Billing Service at 650-903-6317 handles ordering or changing residential service.Official guidance

Where does household hazardous waste go?

Hazardous waste drop-off is by appointment only through the Santa Clara County household hazardous waste program at 408.299.7300, and the hauler states it is illegal to put hazardous waste in the trash or down a drain or gutter. Batteries can go in a sealed bag on top of the split cart with the terminals taped or to the Recycling Center or the SMaRT Station, medications go to the confidential drop box in the Mountain View Police and Fire Administration lobby at 1000 Villa Street, paint goes to PaintCare locations or the SMaRT Station, and sharps go to providers, pharmacies or a MED-Project location.Official guidance

How does the split recycling cart work?

The recycling cart is split into one side for mixed paper and cardboard and the other for bottles and cans, and it is collected with a fully automated truck that keeps the two streams apart until they reach the SMaRT Station. Recycling is collected every other week while trash and compost are weekly, and shredded paper should be placed in a paper bag that is closed tightly.Official guidance

Why can I not book a cleanup in January?

On Call Plus appointments pause between December 26 and the third Friday in January while holiday trees are being collected. A voucher to take the items to the SMaRT Station is the alternative during that period, and holiday trees are collected free on the compost collection day for four weeks from December 26.Official guidance
