The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Norwalk collects through Athens Services, and the route for a couch, a mattress or an appliance is the hauler's bulky item pickup: Athens removes bulky items including major appliances and furniture on request only, scheduled through a bulky item request or by phone at (888) 336-6100, and it refuses construction and demolition debris, automobile parts, loose building material and household hazardous waste outright. The city answers the rest with drop-offs and events. Paint goes to Dunn-Edwards on Imperial Highway, household batteries to four city locations, used motor oil and filters to a free curbside route or a certified collection center, and electronics to a store trade-in counter, a city special waste event or the free Los Angeles County household hazardous waste events. A mattress is a special case: California retailers have to take an old mattress back free when they deliver a new one, and Athens is the last resort.

Bulky items and household junk

Accepted with preparation

Athens Services removes bulky items from a Norwalk address on request only, and it names major appliances and furniture among what it takes. The request goes through the hauler's bulky item form or customer service, and the hauler asks residents to consider reuse or donation first.

City cost & eligibility
The hauler publishes the bulky pickup as a request service without a pickup count or a price, so confirm the allowance and any charge with Athens at (888) 336-6100 or when the request is submitted.
When & how
Submit a bulky item request through the hauler's site or call (888) 336-6100, whose service hours are 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday to Friday and 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM noon Saturday.
Get it ready
Keep bulky items and electronics out of the carts, and leave construction debris, automobile parts, loose building material and lumber, and hazardous waste out of the request, because Athens refuses all of them. Carts themselves go out by 6:00 am with the wheels against the curb, about one foot apart and at least three feet from vehicles or other objects.

Couches, sofas and furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named along with major appliances in the bulky items Athens removes on request, so a couch leaves through the hauler's pickup rather than the trash cart.

City cost & eligibility
No furniture price and no pickup count are published, so confirm the pickup and any charge with Athens at (888) 336-6100.
When & how
Submit the bulky item request or call (888) 336-6100 during the hauler's service hours and set the piece out on the confirmed day.
Get it ready
Keep the furniture whole and out of the carts, and keep refused material such as construction debris, automobile parts and hazardous waste away from the same request.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Norwalk handles mattresses in a specific order. California law requires every mattress retailer to take back a used residential mattress and box spring free of charge when delivering new units, the city links a mattress recycling location finder and notes that CleanLA runs ongoing mattress collection events, and only as a last resort does the city say to contact Athens for a bulky pickup.

City cost & eligibility
The retailer take-back is free by law and the recycling locations and CleanLA events set their own terms, while the hauler's bulky pickup publishes no price. Confirm the chosen route before the mattress leaves the house.
When & how
Start with the retailer delivering a new mattress, the city's mattress recycling location finder, or a CleanLA mattress collection event, and use an Athens bulky pickup only as the last resort.
Get it ready
Keep the unit dry and out of the trash cart, and ask the receiving retailer or recycler whether it needs the mattress bagged or wrapped before the appointment.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Major appliances are named in the bulky items Athens removes on request, so a refrigerator, washer or other white good leaves through the hauler rather than the carts.

City cost & eligibility
The hauler publishes no appliance price and no pickup count, so confirm the unit and any charge with Athens at (888) 336-6100.
When & how
Submit the bulky item request or call (888) 336-6100 and put the appliance out on the confirmed day.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and keep volatile material out of it, because state law prohibits hazardous material in the containers and the hauler refuses hazardous waste, compressed gas cylinders and automotive fluids on the bulky route.
Hauler residential page for Norwalk with cart placement rules, the container prohibitions, the construction diversion service, the county hazardous waste routes and the bulky item terms

Electronics and televisions

Accepted with preparation

Electronics have several routes. Athens will collect electronic waste on a bulky item request, the city points large items such as televisions and stereos at that pickup, stores such as Goodwill, Costco, Apple, Staples, Best Buy and Target offer trade-ins or drop-off bins, and the free Los Angeles County collection events and permanent centers take electronic waste as well.

City cost & eligibility
The hauler pickup publishes no price, the retailer counters set their own terms, and the county events and permanent centers are described as free to county residents. Confirm the route and any charge before loading a vehicle.
When & how
Request an Athens bulky pickup for a large item, use a store trade-in or drop-off bin, or take the device to a Los Angeles County household hazardous waste event or permanent collection center, which the hauler's page describes as free drive-through events and free permanent centers.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the trash and recycling carts, wipe personal data before handover, and keep batteries out of the carts because the city warns they can start fires.

Construction and demolition material

Not on the regular city route

Construction and demolition waste cannot go in a standard cart or bin, and Athens refuses it on a bulky request along with loose or scattered building material and lumber. The hauler offers a separate diversion service for project material that supports CALGreen and state recycling requirements, and the city lists two carpet drop-off companies.

City cost & eligibility
No residential rate is published for construction material: the hauler refuses it on the bulky route and sells a separate project service, and the two carpet drop-offs publish no price. A container or hauling company quotes its own figure before the work starts.
When & how
Arrange the project route with a private container company or through the hauler's construction and demolition service, because neither the carts nor the bulky pickup accept the material.
Get it ready
Keep dirt, concrete, tile, drywall, rock, loose lumber and demolition material out of the carts and off the bulky request so the rest of the collection is not interrupted. Carpet can be taken to Carpet Manufacturers Warehouse at 6111 Randolph St in Commerce or Serv-Wel Disposal & Recycling at 901 S Maple Ave in Montebello, which the city lists with phone numbers.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the bulky categories or in the refused list, so the machine has to be confirmed. It is too large for the cart, which leaves the bulky request as the likely route.

City cost & eligibility
No published price or category covers an exercise machine. Call Athens at (888) 336-6100 with the machine type and size to confirm it can be listed on a bulky request.
When & how
Call the hauler before submitting the request so the machine can be added to the pickup if it is accepted.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart, keep any loose weights with it, and remove a console or battery pack so that part can be handled as electronic waste.

Household hazardous waste and batteries

Accepted with preparation

Norwalk spreads hazardous material across several free or low-cost routes. Used motor oil and filters can be picked up free from the curb or dropped at a certified collection center, paint goes to Dunn-Edwards on Imperial Highway, household batteries go to four city locations, sharps come with a free mail-back container, and the Los Angeles County household hazardous waste events and permanent centers take the rest.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The used oil and filter route is free, including the scheduled curbside pickup, and the Los Angeles County collection events and permanent centers are free to county residents. The paint, battery, medication and store routes publish no price of their own.
When & how
Schedule the free oil and filter pickup at atyourdoor@wm.com or 800-449-7587, use a listed certified collection center, drop paint at Dunn-Edwards at 12125 Imperial Highway, take household batteries to the City Hall Community Information Center, the Norwalk Arts and Sports Complex, the Senior Center or the Social Services Center during regular business hours, or use a county household hazardous waste event.
Get it ready
Keep hazardous material out of the carts, because state law prohibits it there, keep containers closed and clearly labeled, and take car batteries to AutoZone or O'Reilly Auto Parts rather than a household battery bin.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Carts go out by 6:00 am with room around them

Trash, organics and recycling carts are set out with the wheels against the curb by 6:00 am on the regular collection day, side by side about one foot apart and at least three feet from parked vehicles or other objects, with a clear path so the truck can reach them. Bulky items, construction debris, electronic waste and automotive parts are not cart material, and hazardous material is prohibited in the containers by state law.

Hauler residential page for Norwalk with cart placement rules, the container prohibitions, the construction diversion service, the county hazardous waste routes and the bulky item terms

Four categories are refused on a bulky request

Athens refuses automobile parts, construction and demolition debris including dirt, concrete, tile, drywall and rock, hazardous waste such as antifreeze, automotive fluids, cleaning products, compressed gas cylinders full or empty, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, paint, pharmaceuticals, pool chemicals and solvents, and loose or scattered building material and lumber. Each of those has its own route in Norwalk rather than a place in the pickup pile.

Batteries and used oil have their own counters

Household batteries in AAA, AA, C, D, button cell and 9 volt sizes go to four city locations during regular business hours: the City Hall Community Information Center, the Norwalk Arts and Sports Complex, the Senior Center and the Social Services Center. Car batteries go to AutoZone or O'Reilly Auto Parts, and used motor oil and filters are collected free from the curb by appointment or at a certified collection center the city lists.

Request a bulky item pickup from Athens

A household with a couch, a mattress, an appliance, a television or another large item that will not fit in the carts.

Cost & conditions
The hauler removes bulky items on request but publishes no pickup count and no price, so confirm both with Athens at (888) 336-6100 or when the request is submitted.
Arrange it
Submit the bulky item request through the hauler's site or call (888) 336-6100, whose hours are 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday to Friday and 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM noon Saturday.

Automobile parts, construction and demolition debris, hazardous waste, and loose or scattered building material and lumber are refused, and the hauler asks residents to reuse or donate usable items first.

Open the Athens Norwalk page

City of Norwalk Public Services and Athens Services

Use a Los Angeles County hazardous waste event or center

A household with paint, solvents, chemicals, batteries, cell phones, fluorescent lights or electronic waste that cannot go in the carts.

Cost & conditions
No charge. The hauler's page describes the county and Sanitation Districts collection events as free one-day drive-through events and the permanent collection centers as free to county residents.
Arrange it
Look up the next county household hazardous waste collection event or a permanent collection center and take the material there in boxes or original containers.

White goods, tires, business waste and other excluded material are refused at the county events, so an appliance or a mattress has to use its own route instead.

Use the retailer mattress take-back

A household buying a new mattress or box spring from a California retailer.

Cost & conditions
No charge. By law every California mattress retailer must offer to take back a used residential mattress and box spring free of charge when it delivers new units.
Arrange it
Ask the delivering retailer to take the old unit at the same time, or use the mattress recycling location finder the city links or a CleanLA mattress collection event.

The free take-back is tied to a new delivery, so a household with no purchase has to use a recycling location, a CleanLA event, or the Athens bulky pickup as a last resort.

City of Norwalk Public Services and Athens Services

Use the city's paint, battery and oil drop-offs

A household with leftover paint, household batteries or used motor oil and filters.

Cost & conditions
The oil and filter route is described as free, including the curbside pickup, while the paint and battery drop-offs publish no price. Confirm the current terms before a trip.
Arrange it
Take paint to Dunn-Edwards at 12125 Imperial Highway, phone (562) 864-7162 for hours, household batteries to the City Hall Community Information Center, the Norwalk Arts and Sports Complex, the Senior Center or the Social Services Center during regular business hours, and schedule free oil and filter pickup at atyourdoor@wm.com or 800-449-7587.

The battery bins take AAA, AA, C, D, button cell and 9 volt sizes only, car batteries go to AutoZone or O'Reilly Auto Parts instead, and the paint counter's hours are not published on the city page.

Arrange a private container for a project load

A household or contractor with construction, renovation or demolition debris that neither the carts nor the bulky pickup accept.

Cost & conditions
No residential rate is published for construction material, so the container or hauling company quotes its own price before the load is moved.
Arrange it
Contact a private container company or use the hauler's separate construction and demolition diversion service, which the hauler describes as supporting CALGreen and state recycling requirements.

Construction and demolition debris cannot go in a standard cart or bin and is refused on the bulky request, so the material has to leave on a project route.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Norwalk's household routes are mostly collection and counter based. Athens removes bulky items including major appliances and furniture on request through its bulky item form or at (888) 336-6100, and it refuses construction and demolition debris, automobile parts, loose building material and lumber, and hazardous waste. The city answers the rest with drop-offs: used motor oil and filters are free from the curb by appointment at atyourdoor@wm.com or 800-449-7587, or at a certified collection center the city lists with addresses on Norwalk Boulevard, Pioneer Boulevard, Studebaker Road, Firestone Boulevard and Imperial Highway; old paint goes to Dunn-Edwards at 12125 Imperial Highway; household batteries go to four city locations during business hours and car batteries to AutoZone or O'Reilly; sharps come with a free mail-back container; and the remaining household chemicals and electronic waste go to the free Los Angeles County collection events or permanent centers. Mattresses follow a different order entirely, because a California retailer has to take the old unit back free when it delivers a new one, and Athens is the last resort. Carpet can be dropped at Carpet Manufacturers Warehouse in Commerce or Serv-Wel Disposal & Recycling in Montebello, and project debris needs a private container.
