Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Televisions, monitors and electronics

Special rules apply

Televisions and monitors are refused at the city household hazardous waste station, which takes only electronics with embedded batteries, and no city page publishes an electronics drop off. The city routes televisions and monitors to electronics retailers.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no charge because it publishes no electronics drop off of its own: the household hazardous waste station explicitly refuses electronics without embedded batteries, and the city's own resource table sends televisions and monitors to electronics retailers. Confirm the item and any fee with the retailer you choose, and use the household hazardous waste station only for small devices with embedded batteries such as cell phones and tablets.
When & how
Use a retailer's take back or recycling programme during its own business hours, or bring small battery containing devices to the household hazardous waste station on a Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or the first Friday of the month from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before handover, keep televisions, monitors and other corded electronics out of the Clean Up Day pile and out of the curbside carts, and take small electronics with embedded batteries to the household hazardous waste station instead.

The household hazardous waste station has residency rules and a volume limit

The station at 2501 Embarcadero Way opens every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the first Friday of each month from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and it is for Palo Alto residents who can show a driver's license or vehicle registration. A visit is limited to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of material in containers no larger than five gallons, which is also the state transport limit, and containers have to be secured against spilling in the vehicle.

Batteries and motor oil left the weekly cart route

Household batteries are no longer taken with weekly curbside recycling. Acceptable alkaline and similar batteries go out during a Clean Up Day in a sealed, clear, tear resistant bag placed on top of the blue recycle cart, and lithium or lithium-ion batteries go to the household hazardous waste station instead. Motor oil follows the same split, with up to three one gallon containers of oil and filters set out in a sealed clear bag on Clean Up Day or taken to the station.

Take televisions and monitors to an electronics retailer

A household with a television, a monitor or another corded electronic item that the household hazardous waste station refuses.

Cost & conditions
The city routes televisions and monitors to electronics retailers through the regional StopWaste directory, and each retailer sets its own terms, so confirm acceptance and any fee with the store before loading the screen.
Arrange it
Search the StopWaste directory for an electronics retailer near the address, then call the store for its current hours and accepted items.

This is not a city programme, so the household hazardous waste volume limit and residency rule do not apply here, and some retailers charge or refuse large or damaged units.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Palo Alto households mostly stay at the curb: bulky material rides one of the two pre-scheduled Clean Up Days each year, with caps of three bulky items at 200 pounds or less, three individual items under 60 pounds and 3 feet cubed, three bags of textiles, labelled recyclables, six bundles of yard trimmings, three bags of garbage and six boxes or bundles of construction material, all at the curb by 6 a.m. on the date and no more than 24 hours early. The one place that takes self hauled material is the household hazardous waste station at 2501 Embarcadero Way, open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the first Friday of the month from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., for residents with proof of residency and a 15 gallon or 125 pound limit per visit. That station takes batteries, paint, solvents, motor oil, automotive batteries, fluorescent bulbs, mercury waste and small electronics with embedded batteries, but it refuses televisions, monitors and microwaves, which the city routes to electronics retailers instead. A project bigger than the Clean Up Day construction allowance needs a debris box quoted by GreenWaste of Palo Alto at (650) 493-4894. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Palo Alto.

How much does TV removal cost in Palo Alto?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in Palo Alto?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

Can I take an old television to the Palo Alto household hazardous waste station?

No. The station refuses electronics without embedded batteries, which its own list gives as televisions, monitors and microwaves. Small electronics with embedded batteries such as cell phones and tablets are accepted, and the city's resource table routes televisions and monitors to electronics retailers.Official guidance

Where do old televisions and monitors go?

Not to the household hazardous waste station, which refuses electronics without embedded batteries and names televisions, monitors and microwaves in that refusal. The city's own resource table routes televisions and monitors to electronics retailers, so use a store take back programme and confirm its current terms, while small devices with embedded batteries such as cell phones and tablets can go to the station.Official guidance

What do I need to bring to the household hazardous waste station?

Proof of Palo Alto residency, such as a driver's license or vehicle registration, and no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of material per visit in containers no larger than five gallons. The station is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the first Friday of each month from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., with containers secured in the vehicle.Official guidance

Where do batteries go now?

Batteries are no longer taken with weekly curbside recycling. Alkaline and similar household batteries go out on Clean Up Day in a sealed, clear, tear resistant bag placed on top of the blue recycle cart, and lithium or lithium-ion batteries go to the household hazardous waste station, which also takes small electronics with embedded batteries.Official guidance
